A while back I bought a Vincent Bach Corp. 5C off ebay. The seller claimed it was from Vacchiano's personal collection.

Anyway, right under the cup there's a "23" which I assume means a 23 throat? At the very top of shank it's marked "S". I have no idea what the S means. The metal at the bottom of the shank is extremely thin, more thin than anything else I've got.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
o00Joe

Yes the 23 would be the throat... Unless someone enlarged it more without marking it on there.

The S stands for symphonic and indicates a larger backbore was drilled in... And yes, it'd be thinner at the end of the shank in that case.

In either case, there's not necessarily any guarantees of who did the work - it could be factory or aftermarket.

If it plays well that's the main thing as always.

I was wondering if we could associate a Bach backbore number with the "S" marking.

It's definitely a great mouthpiece. I like like throats but large backbores put too much of that fuzziness and air in the sound. (I already have a naturally dark sound, I have a very high roof of my mouth.) I use the piece for more commercial or intimate jazz style playing actually.

Most definitely---the "S" on the shank is the precursor of the 24 backbore.
