Greetings Brotherhood,

I have played the Yamaha YTR 8340EM since 2007 and continue to enjoy it thoroughly. Everything I have found has indicated that this is a "poly-bore" horn. For those who may be in the know ... is this consider a smaller bore, medium or larger bore horn ? I am just curious.

It is also my understanding that the Yamaha 8310Z is designed with the Schilke B6 in mind ?

Just seeking informative opinions etc.

Yes, all of the above. The reverse leadpipe upper tube is .460", the valve section bore is .445" while the slide crooks and main tuning slide are .468" extra large bore. So you can understand why they call it "Multi bore".

I hope this is helpful.

I don't know all the specs of that horn, but I've played a friends a couple times. They play like a Shew horn on steroids!!

Both horns kinda play like a medium bore Schilke but a touch tighter blow, and a more colorful sound. But Eric's horn can get wide and fun!! I think it's that massive bell maybe?

I often wonder why you don't see more of those horns in silver plate though?

It is extremely versatile. Depending on the mouthpiece used, you can get just about any tone you want. It doesn't play tight at all to me. Very lightweight so you can feel it resonating when you play.

Russell,

I was expecting you to be playing! Although Steve plays great!

I had an 8340EM for a while. I have had my 8310Z since 2005. The 8340EM is a bit lighter, the bell taper is a bit different as well as the horn having a 5 1/4" bell as opposed to the 5" bell on the Shew. Both horns play well, but I just prefer the 8310Z.

Bob Malone has done wonderful things in research, design and development of the Yamaha line along with artist input.

I got an 8340EM a while back via trade and I thought it was a very good horn. I would have kept it, but needed the money and also needed to downsize. If you just sit back and relax on it, you can really make the horn sing. The gentleman that bought it from me actually owned one and wanted mine as a backup. He clearly liked them.

Hi Russell,

As far as I know, the original 6310/6310B (before 6310Z) was based on Bob McCoy's Martin Committee. I think that there is some info out on the internet about this, refered to by Bobby Shew. The B6 is more likely based on the Martin Committee also, as Mr. Schilke was part of the "committee", the owner/ designer of Schilke trumpets and assisted Yamaha in their production of the 600/700 series pro trumpets back in the 70's.

So the 6310Z/8310Z/8340EM are refined versions of the previous Yamaha commercial trumpets. If I am not mistaken, EM used to play on a Schilke X3.

Here is some info from http://abel.hive.no/trompet/playerhorn/ :

Bob McCoy:
Martin-Committee 2B 9 (he loaned to Bob Malone to copy the first 636 models -later became the Shew models)
Besson for many years
