I'm looking for a pocket trumpet to use when traveling. Does anyone have suggestions on a good brand? |

I picked up an Allora with a black nickel finish about 4 years ago, I take it with me on vacations. It's a nice little horn with a small case and has held up nicely. The cost is about middle of the road, Woodwind and Brasswind has them for $329, you can find others for more and some for less. Hope this helps.

Manchester Brass from ACB is excellant. It has a full sized bell and good tone in all registers. Yamaha Silent Brass works great. Its more expensive, but totally worth the extra dollars. _________________ Bb - Schilke B6, SB4-MG Soloiste

I've played a few and they all seem very much alike. Out of all the ones I've tried the Allora or the Cecilio/Mendini seem to me to be the most reasonable for travel horn. For less than $200 either can be had new with a warranty and they do just as they're supposed to. Might not have the best fit and finish or anything fancy but it's a pocket trumpet..........a novelty _________________ a few different ones |

Check out the Wisemann on Scoutbugle.com.
It used to be sold by the Canadian Brass several years ago. _________________ -fred

I purchased the Mendini a year and a half ago, which now sells for about $120. I use it for practicing while on vacation and it serves its purpose. I can even pack the horn in its case in the corner of my suit case and thus far no problems. You may get what you pay for, but I don't lose any sleep worrying about it. _________________ Steve Smith |

I have a Carol. It's excellent. Bell takes regular sized mutes, too. Put it in a gig bag, pack it in the suit case and forget about it. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

My question to all of you who do not have a full sized bell is: Does the Trumpet hold a mute? If not then practicing in a hotel or condo is difficult. Even a small Trumpet is loud, a full sized bell coupled with a silent brass is perfect for travel! _________________ Bb - Schilke B6, SB4-MG Soloiste

If you don't want to spend several thousand dollars on a pocket trumpet that plays as well as a good full-sized Bb, I think the Manchester is your best bet.. Best quality for the $$ and closest to a full size Bb sound.. unless you want to go to the next level: http://stomvi-usa.com/shop/forte-pocket-bb-trumpet/ If you want to go beyond that, you're probably looking at $3K+ But I've played the Manchester pocket on some jazz gigs and recording.. Full size bell..you can put whisper mutes in there for practice on the road.. And, if you are going for the most compact you can, the Best Brass whisper mute is excellent.. fits right inside the bell and takes up no extra room. All the best, Lex _________________ Mpcs: Jim New-Manley Jazz1/Jazz2/Jazz4/Lead3. Legends MF1. Reeves 39EX/HV. Frost 39MVD. Flugel: Jim NewMF3. Jim New-Manley F1+F2. Pickett MF. Reeves HF.

Good Afternoon;
I've got the Jupiter pocket trumpet (small bell), and I stuff a Sshhmute practice mute in it all the time. Works great. I haven't had any trouble with straight or cup mutes either.

The Mendini takes a Yamaha Silent brass system mute without any problems. I've practiced in hotels, apartments and cruise ships without a complaint. In a hotel room or ship you can't hear it in the hallway or even in the bathroom. _________________ Steve Smith |

The only pocket trumpet i have played is the Carol Brass. I have to say that I was quite surprised by how well it played. I don't think that it is the cheapest option, but it is a splendid little horn at a reasonable price. I've been eyeing it pretty closely. It might be my next purchase.
Warm regards,

Yes, the Carol Brass pocket trumpet is surprisingly good, and better than other brands/models of pocket trumpets that I have played. Mine came from Trent Austin's shop, and Trent is always great to work with. Full-size bell, decent intonation, and a reasonable blow. Nicely made, for the price. It wouldn't be my first choice for performance, but it would work. Nice and compact. |

I've had a lot of experience with pocket trumpets: Benge, Carol, Jupiter, Mendini, and an Indian or Pakistani knock-off.
The Benge was the best albeit pricey. The Carol was pretty good The Jupiter suffered because of its small bell. The Mendiini not a bad sound and very affordable. The Indian or Pakistani more suited for calling ducks.
I no longer have any pocket trumpet. For travel I've found the best bet is a cornet, the smaller the better. My current fav is a WW I era King that doesn't take up much more space than a pocket trumpet and sounds a lot better. _________________ Jim Hatfield

I too have owned many pocket trumpets.
The CarolBrass is excellent.
A Wisemann is a VERY good option for much cheaper.
My favourite is the SMALL bell Jupiter, which I preferred much moreso then the 516 big belled version. Small for travel yet with an acceptable playabilty for sit-ins/practice when travelling.
And, so many others which don't match up to the above. |

D | As long as they can hold a mute I would think they will serve the purpose. I only use my MCB to keep in shape while traveling. Its all about buzing I guess. It is nice though that the playable range is from double pedal C to High C. Seriously, without a mute the little guy sounds pretty good! I returned the Allora for the MCB. There was no comparison. Hope this helps the OP. _________________ Bb - Schilke B6, SB4-MG Soloiste

I travel and I have a different solution.
A cornet fits into a laptop case easily and I have room in it for mute books and music.
A cornet doesnt just give you a travel solution, it gives you full horn playability, an alternate tone colour, the option of playing in brass bands, and a real horn feel and rich tone.
Available from your friendly neighborhood garage sale or ebay from 20 dollars and up it has few downsides. It is a real instrument not a gimmic and you might even come to love it.
I have 3 cornets, an 80 dollar one a 20 dollar one and a 15 dollar one and all play sweetly and sound gorgeous.
Last time I travelled I took the 20 dollar one and it made me 30 dollars.
Whats not to like. |
