Do all three types of current Yamaha synthetic oil mix well with each other?
There are Light, Regular and Vintage types.
When mixing Regular with Vintage do I get a consistency of "semi-Vintage" ?

Do you really need that level of weight? Is the 3 choices not specific enough?

I really find the regular to be quite excellent in most applications.

Let me put it slightly different.
"Are all three types of Yamaha synthetic valve oil mutually compatible?"
Can I mix all three in any combinations? Are they based on the same recipe and is only density/viscosity varied in a specific type?

I heard that Hetman #s #1, #2 and #3 and beyond that can be mixed in any combinations.

Is it the same for Yamaha?

No idea.

Do you really need to mix to get the right weight? Or are you just wondering if you need to clean before trying a different weight.

They will mix just fine.

Thank you, MO!

CF, I just need to do that. Mixing is not the goal but rather side effect that has to be successful.

How often is it recommended to reoil with a synthetic oil like Yamaha if playing couple hours a day daily? Can I go without reoiling for 3-4 days? Will it be sufficient?
With Blue Juice I oil valves every time I play.

Oil is pretty cheap compared to the cost of a valve job. Why risk it?

I don't want to risk it or save on oil or anything like that.
What I'm talking about is there is a common opinion that with synthetic oils like Yamaha you don't need to oil as often because it doesn't evaporate so quickly compared to petroleum based oils.
In other words why waste oil if you don't have to?

Over-thinking an issue which doesn't exist may be the more common opinion. Just oil the valves. There are many, many different bands and recipes of valve oil. Some are great, some really suck, for the individual. Each to what works!

cheers

Andy

Some of the oil gets diluted and washed away by water collecting in the instrument then emptied through the water keys. That's why I oil the valves after I finish playing, every time, to restore the balance of oil so the valves aren't floating in water. The valves would still feel and work fine even if I went several days between oiling, but there wouldn't be much oil left in the valves by that time, mostly just water.

Monster Oil, maybe you can step in with your professional recommendations?
What do you think about frequency of oiling with synthetic oils vs petroleum based oils? Do the former can be applied on a comparatively less frequent basis?

When I'm playing seriously, I usually oil every day or so. When I'm just teaching, I oil when I get annoyed with my valves.

In my and my student's experience, you can probably go 3-4 days with little or no issue. In fact, you could probably go much longer, if you really want to. I'm not saying you should or recommending that, I'm just speaking from personal and close observational experience.

Yamaha synthetic is a very nice oil. I would say it's a huge step up in performance from Blue Juice - one of my least favorite and least effective oils in my opinion and experience. But, mileage varies....

3 days sounds like a reasonable interval between synthetic oil applications comparing to what I've read before about other player's experience with these oils.
I wouldn't like to take this interval to the extremes just for the sake of saving on oil. The reason I'm asking about it is to find out if the manufacturers of these oils really intended to make their synthetic oils essentially more economical compared to petro-based oils.
Of course only the manufacturers could answer this question directly but I doubt any of them would make a statement that could fail in some specific cases with some players and their equipment.

So in the end as DB noted it should come from our own experience. Perhaps it's not as bad as "living on the edge" is but conducting an experiment with your trumpet valves can be a sad experience.

Well, we're a bit biased of course. I oil maybe once every other week. When things start to get a little slower, I just throw some more on and know that it's going to be great for quite some time.

As to other oils - well we have a policy to not denigrate other companies - there are too many jerks in business.

Best,

Tom

Oil can be quite variable.

Some only lasts 3 hours some lasts 3 weeks, the better the oil the longer it lasts.

Oil the valves, play every day examine the valves every day when the valves show signs of needing more oil note that down, then oil exactly twice as often as that would suggest. Over oil do not under oil.

If the oil lasts 4 days and needs replacing, re-oil every 2 days.

If it lasts 2 weeks re-oil every week.

Oil does not mix with water. It can form an emulsion however but not in a trumpet.
