|
|
I saw a video a while back of a recording session probably from 15 - 20 years ago or so featuring father & son trumpet players - their playing was super clean, I swear neither of them split a note during the take. Unfortunately I didn't save the link. Anyone know the video I'm talking about? _________________ Getzen Eterna Severinsen

The son is John Thomas, former lead player for Count Basie, Chick Corea, Woody Herman, Ella Fitzgerald and many others. He's currently a Professor of Jazz Studies at USC. Back in the early '80's he played Lead Trumpet for a stint in the A Band of the Los Angeles Jazz Workshop (LAJW). He was one of the first "star-level" trumpet players I got to play with. |

I'm just blown away by how clean, vibrant, in tune and flawless both of their performances are here. Great that the son inherited his father's talent and that they got to work together in a professional capacity.
I see Uan Rasey and Snooky Young in the section, not sure who the other two are.
Okay, it's Gary Grant and John Audino. _________________ Getzen Eterna Severinsen

As that video played, they panned to the rest of the band, and I was thinking, "was that Snooky Young!?"
Yep. Sure was. Interesting when you've got that caliber of a player in the band and he's NOT the featured player!
Here's "the rest" of the trumpet section - you know, the scrubs that weren't being featured! LOL!
Trumpets: Gary Grant (lead), Johnny Audino, Uan Rasey, Snooky Young.
It's like, holy guacamole - can there be any more talent in that section?
Snooky has been gone since 2011, and his hair was still pretty dark in this video, so I'm curious when it was shot. The publishing date is 2013, and it's clearly well before that.
(EDIT: from what I can find, John Audino passed away in 1989, so this video is pretty dated.) _________________ Patrick Gleason

I grew up in N. Texas and Don Thomas had the best lead sound there is. If you need a sound in your head to emulate when you are playing... His is a good one. He was also a virtuoso legit player, playing in the Ft. Worth Symphony for decades. I have heard recordings of him playing great Dixieland jazz too. Bill Collins has many recordings and videos of Don from their years of playing together.. look him up on Facebook. There is a Don Thomas memorial page there as well.
Check out this tribute video Bill Collins made in 2014. That sound.. damn!
