Hey everyone! So our local theater will be doing 9 to 5 this summer for 4 weekends. I was wondering if there is anything I should look out for in the trumpet 1 book? It'll be a little pit band...drummer, 2 keyboards, trombone, 2 reed players, and myself on trumpet.
Thanks! _________________ Mouthpieces:

With that small of a pit you'll want to play as loud as you can, and take everything you can up an octave. And don't worry about intonation. Playing in tune of for wimps.
Yes, I drank one too many cups of coffee today... |

Played the show last Fall... much more fun than I anticipated - more bluesy rock than country music. And as you've seen, the A is optional.... and there are only a couple spots where the key and licks might jump up and bite you.
There apparently are 2 settings of the show - the Broadway version and the tour version. The show didn't do to well in NYC so was conciderably changed for the US tour(s), which did much better.
I played the tour version, had some abrupt segues/key changes but very playable.

This is the one I used to work up the show. The tempos were very close to what we used on a production I did in May.

That's good to know! Still figuring out how I'm going to hit that double A with consistency...LOL! _________________ Mouthpieces:

If I may interject here...and not knowing anything about your playing...
Seriously...it's just an A. We often get hung up on high notes by letting our brains talk us out of playing them.
Back off on any tension. It comes at the end of an ascending line, so blow THROUGH the note until you release it. Chest up, shoulders loose, corners firm, air unrestricted, HEAR THE NOTE IN YOUR HEAD. It does not have to be loud - it will carry and cut through at a nice mf - f dynamic.
Even tho it's marked marcato staccato, go ahead and show off a bit by letting it ring out. You've earned that little bit of spotlight! _________________ Tim Wendt

Thanks for the advice! I definitely tense up when I see anything above a high F. That's usually the top of my range where I know I can/will hit it without trouble. And overblowing...huge thing I need to overcome for sure. _________________ Mouthpieces:
