I am going to a new boarding school later this year and that means that every holiday, I have to take out my belongings (luggage and other three instruments) so I have decided to leave my trumpets at school and keep a cornet in my home country so that I can practice during holidays.

So, I found a nice 1951 Reynolds Contempora Cornet without any triggers but only with the 3rd slide ring in rather nice condition but with some silver wear. It is in the 200 dollar range.

I also found a Bach Stradivarius 181 cornet which is newer but 3 times more expensive.

Which one would be a better choice for regular practice and for easy carry around?

Here I am ignoring price issues, just about the playability of each horns and its advantages & disadvantages.

Having never played either horn, I will now proceed to give you advice.

If the extra cost of the Bach is a stretch for you financially, get the Reynolds. The Reynolds Contempora has a fine reputation and would serve you well. If the extra cost is not much of a stretch for you, then play-test both horns and pick the one you like best (with a tie score going to the Contempora). Logic!

Franklin Delano, if you are going to do nothing and always make trouble, I suggest you zip your mouth and go in holiday to your island.

I am sick of your behavior, you are acting like some jealous baby.

You list 4 Bb trumpets, and you need to buy another to leave at home? Save the $$$ and leave one at home, or three. Take 1 instrument, unless you KNOW that the music program is so advanced you will be playing piccolo, C trumpet, etc...

That will make the trip lighter and cheaper. Plus, there is mail. You can get the family to post any axe you need later.

cheers

Andy

p.s. if you are on the way to Sydney (east coast Aust), tell me which school and I'll tell you what the program is like.

I am afraid my analysis is spot on, there is also some history on TM. And that's also the reason he posts his fake question here and not on TM.

Franklin, I don't care, you can do whatever you want on your island.

But seriously you should really know when to speak and speak only the truth. Stop the assumptions.

I've never played a Reynolds I liked compared to my Bach's, but I have to say that my Bach 181 cornet is one of my favorite horns. To me it feels like my Bach 37 trumpet with better flexibility, if that makes sense.

BBM I personally think you should go with a Bach! That way you'll most likely never doubt the equipment

True, Bach is trustable. In fact, I have one in my mind I might buy for the traveling purposes.

The Reynolds Contempora horns are solid, both in playing and in build. A lot of the Contempora cornets are large bore, so note that when comparing to Bach, especially the 37 bell model which is almost always ML. (L bore 181 is usually coupled with the 25 bell.)

I like the Reynolds horns. But they are just a tad different from my Bachs and I must admit that I prefer Bach, probably just because it is what I am most used to.

The Reynolds Contempora, especially the Leonard Smith models, are beautiful instruments to look at with their bronz-o-lyte bells and nickel tone rings and play beautifully, too.

Ah what a relief. I thought your first "Just another cry for attention" post was directed at me. But apparently I've still got you all fooled...

It's a trick question. Obviously the horn you should get is a Getzen Eterna.
