Hello Trumpet World!
I could listen to Chris Martin on the Lincoln soundtrack just about all day. What an awesome example of pure music on the trumpet. It's as if there is no instrument in his hands, just music.
I'm sure most of you have heard this already, but you should probably go listen again immediately!

I agree also.
My feeling is that there is a unique purity and clarity to his playing. Virtually every note he plays is in the 'sweet spot' of the tone and is extremely in tune. And the trumpet tends to yield to the music. His fortes are never overly aggressive and the sound never blares. The John Williams solo is a great example of his skill.

Hi Dave,
It was most certainly about kindness from me. And, my wife is the same. Calling her lovely is something she takes great joy in hearing. My friends often refer to her as "lovely and talented", and she's a surgical nurse, where the mask might hide some of the "loveliness"!
Chris' playing, both with the ensemble and piano on the separate video links, is gorgeous. It is amazing that he plays two separate horns in different keys for the two performances, and although one can hear the difference, it is not a "hear" in a negative way, just a different approach in terms of the sound as required by the instrument he has chosen to play. I think he is an incredible player and at the top of the newer generation of principal trumpeters.
And the performance by Mrs. Martin is masterful on the piano, working with Chris to create a sustained quality that shapes and blends the music as effectively as done by the winds in the other video. Sometimes, it is difficult to get the sustained quality of wind or strings from a piano, where the sound decay is immediate and a sustained increase in volume requires a re-attack of the note. Mrs. Martin did this exceptionally well.
