Boston Symphony Orchestra music director Andris Nelsons is (temporarily) giving up the baton this weekend to play fourth trumpet on Strauss' "Festmusik der Stadt Wien" and third on Benjamin Britten's “Fanfare for St. Edmundsbury” with Tom Rolfs and Håkan Hardenberger. I think it is awesome that maestro Nelsons has started playing trumpet again and that Tom Rolfs is giving him lessons!

Thanks for posting this great story. And lessons from Rolfs and Hardenberger—wow! Can't beat that.

Good. It's about time that a conductor started to actually earn his salary by working, instead of letting other people earn it for him .

It's like the well worn phrase by the crusty old Sergeant about Officers, (Don't call me Sir, I work for a living!). Sounds good but overlooks all the work that makes a good officer, (or conductor).

BTW, it's surprising how many former trumpet players, proportionate-wise, moved into wind conduct8ing slots.
