Dizzy said he was 27 before his played his first Bb above high C. The same age I played mine - coincidentally (shame he could play the piss out the the trumpet and I can't). Regardless of the note (which is so incredibly arbitrary and amusical), early Diz was so exciting to listen to. He would perfectly place his upper register phrases such that they lifted the music. Such fire in his sound. Those early recordings with Bird. Very few high note jocks evoke anywhere near the feeling Diz does. That's music. The rest is sport.
How about this...how many trumpet players can play double Cs and DONT have careers? Bet there's a fair few
