I'm looking for suggestions as to what to buy to use as a 'beater' horn, I live in new Orleans and do a fair bit of street / parade playing and there's no way I'm going to take my Eclipse out on those kinds of gigs .... I'm currently playing an Olds Ambassador for this kind of work, but I find it really stuffy, especially in the upper register. I also seem to tire more quickly than I might expect. Does anyone have any suggestions as to something I might pick up cheaply to use for this kind of work ?

thanks in advance

Simon

If the ambassador is in good condition, maybe easier to modify it than replace it - maybe replace leadpipe or remove the forward brace or something?

King 601. Valves are usually great. Bore a little more generous than the usual ML horn. Built solid.

Hmmm, if you look up "beater horn" in the dictionary, the definition is "Olds Ambassador".

If you get something better than an Olds Ambassador, you are no longer in the beater category - in my humble opinion, of course.

Warm regards,
Grits

Lots of Getzen 300-series horns out there and they've got the same valves as their top of the line horns.

Completely agree. I also agree with the first responder. The best option, IMO, is to modify the ambassador. I have one that I have "hot rodded" and while I don't play it as a "gig" horn because I don't need to .... if I had to it would more than do the job.

I'd agree. Hot rod the Ambassador - he said he's finding it stuffy up high. Or, get "the modern Ambassador", a Kanstul 700.

Any of the Getzen student-line horns (used) should be fine for that. They are good horns with great valves.

Another option might be to replace the leadpipe on your Ambassador. I've played two Ambassadors that had Pilczuk leadpipes (not sure which one). It made a big difference.

Good luck!

Have the valve alignment checked on the ambassador?

Buy a Conn Director cornet from the 1960s. They are great trumpets...

Sounds like a trumpet, plays like a trumpet, really nice upper register, not stuffy at all, good intonation.

Dale - Like this one?

I think they're a music store because they list on CL a lot. This means they can probably ship it OK and can take a credit card or paypal.

I've heard that a Bach 43 pipe will open it right up, or one of these:

There's a large bore Getzen Severinson in the marketplace for $825. Definitely NOT stuffy.

That's a nice one, and has a Coprion bell, too. I had the brass-bell model (15A) more in mind for a beater. One in fairly decent shape can usually be found for $100-$150.

I had this very issue when I was younger - after going through what you are for many years I decided to use my 'good' horn all the time.

Stop worrying about it and just use what your comfortable with for everything. It's not a piece of jewelry - it's a trumpet that's meant to be played!!!

Austin Custom Brass is advertising a Brasspire 950H performance trumpet. Looks ideal for what you're doing.
