What mouthpiece should I be using on my Olds Super? Short shank cornet mouthpieces rattle around in the receiver, and my Yamaha 14B4 long shank cornet mouthpiece sinks in to the bottom ring of the mouthpiece. I tried putting my trumpet mouthpiece in, but it sticks WAY out, so that is not the correct combination.

Thanks!

You most likely need the large shank mouthpieces Olds used on their cornets until the latter part of the Fifties. Check this article and see what your options are...

Olds cornet mouthpieces of that era were are larger than the standard long shank (Bach, let's say) cornet mouthpieces of today. Trumpet mouthpieces had more or less standardized by that point - cornet, not as much.

The previous post details this.

I know of two companies that make cornet mouthpieces with options for Olds shanks through special order: Warburton and Curry. Both work great.

+1 Curry, they made me a 1 1/4C with an Olds shank several years ago when I had an Olds Recording cornet from the 1950's.

Hello all,
I have a Special cornet from that era, and I called Warburton. they had the blanks already made and all they had to do was to lathe out the backbore I wanted. I had the piece within a couple of days. That was shank only as I already have the cups I use.

Matt Frost at Frost Custom Brass will re-shank a mouthpiece to the large shank Olds for $50 plus optional plating. So you can use your favorite.

find it near the bottom of the Services page of his site.

Also, I had an email exchange with Phyllis at Stork mouthpieces and they will put the proper big Olds shank on any of their cornet mouthpieces. It's a $40 "shank alteration" fee.

If you find yourself a vintage Olds 3, that's a Great place to start.
