It looks like soon enough, I will be requiring both C and D trumpets and luckily to my delight I found this Bach Stradivarius C/D trumpet for around 750 dollars.

Would it be wise to buy this horn and complete my quest?

1) That is likely a solid deal!
2) It all depends on what you need the C side for. This is likely a M bore, small bell D trumpet with C slides. Many of these instruments (I'm guessing this is a M bore horn with a 236 bell) play very nicely in both D and C, however due to the large difference in design from traditional C trumpets, which are large bore, larger bell instruments, it will likely not suit your needs if the "large instrument" sound concept (for lack of better words) is what you are after.

Thanks for the reply! Its an early elkhart one and I might go for it. I am aiming for light orchestral work, sort all diverse kind of stuff. Classical, auditions and etc.

D/C combo sounds like a real dream to me!

It might suit very light orchestral work, however, having owned and played some of these horns, the C side will likely not blend so well in a section, and it might not play with the sound you want/need for auditions. It may play nicely, and I doubt you'll find a much better fit for $750, however keep in mind it will probably not be the long term answer if playing in an orchestra/auditioning/etc.

I understand! Thanks for the reply! Definitely for the price of 750, it sounds fair. It would be handy but not the main axe. But for NOW it will be the main axe.

Its very worn in lacquer and looks like it has done some major works for the previous owner! Maybe this could be an exception and could play quite well! You never know!??!?!

It's always nice to find an earlier Bach. To further clarify, these combo horns can have a nice vintage Bach sound but were built as a compromise. It's basically a smaller bore D trumpet that comes with some extra longer slides so it can play in C as well but the issue you will find is that they don't play very well in tune and will be much more resistant than an ML or L bore C.

I've owned a few of these but I think you'll find it pretty difficult to be successful with using it for auditions etc. either way, if it makes you happy, enjoy it.

Do New Zealand orchestra players typically use C trumpets as their main axe or do they use Bb trumpets? If the answer is C trumpet, then the horn you're considering might be disappointing to you.
