The Getzen 3850 is a fantastic horn. I owned one until very recently (sold it after I inherited a cornet and couldn't justify owning two cornets).
I used mine for brass quintets and choirs, plus a few pieces in orchestra. It worked really well for those purposes. Lovely warm sound, superb valves.
Good luck! |

I own a silver Getzen 3850 with the copper bell. It's great! Easy to play, has a nice warm sound that can get brilliant if pushed hard enough, great intonation, well-made. I play-tested the copper bell version, which I bought, and the rose brass bell version, which also was nice. _________________ Bb Yamaha Xeno 8335IIS

v. nice horn, a fraction "trumpety" for Brass Band work IMO, but really really nice to play.
Cheers,

The "trumpety" tendency while stressed could be ameliated by 1)deeper mouthpiece 2)player blowing Brass-bandish! (=not lead trumpet hero).
Wonderful horn - personally I don't find it trumpety! Valves just marvellous

Hi Seymour,
The one I played sounded a bit "trumpety" with both a Wick 4 and a Curry 3 BBC
I emphasise a bit - it was noticeable in a section of Sovereigns, but would be fine really. Just if you are really after a classic BBB sound, there are other cornets that will be easier to get it on.
The valves were magnificent, as on all Getzens.
Cheers,

Well, I suspect the politics of instrument brand/model are a lot different for Cory, Black Dyke, Grimethorpe, etc. than for the other 99% of brass bands, if that's even why you want a new cornet.
For most brass bands, especially in the US, you'll see a wide range of cornets. More importantly, you'll also see a wide range of mouthpieces. None of this "Everybody must play a Wick" silliness.
Long story short, the 3850 is a very nice cornet. I've never played a silver plated one, only a few examples of the rose brass one, but they were great horns.
Really the only thing I don't like about it is the Amado water keys, but you can have one built with conventional ones instead, if you happen to even think the same as I do about that. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

Also compare it to the 800 Eterna; either in .464" or the ML .460" will blow more like the 3850. |

If you had the chance, would you trade your 3850 Getzen for a York Eminence cornet? _________________ Richard
