Hi all,

I'm hoping that the hive mind can help me out here. I'm in the process of putting together a recital with a soprano. There's plenty of repertoire from the Baroque and 20th/21st Centuries to choose from, but I'm having some difficulty finding anything from the Classical and Romantic periods. Works originally written for this combination are ideal, but arrangements might do in a pinch.

As part of this project, I've also been trying to obtain a copy of Peter Tiefenbach's, "Three Poems" with no luck. I've emailed him directly and so far, no response.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Richard

As far as I know, there is not really anything from the classic/romantic periods for trumpet and soprano (but don't quote me on that). I have to add that I don't understand why as trumpeters we feel the need to program music from every possible era on every single recital. How many orchestra concerts have you attended that began with baroque music, swept through romantic/classical, and ended up in the 21st century?

I'm not trying to pick on you, I'm just making a general statement about how we program recitals. Why not get a little more creative with selecting your repertoire? You could try:

- Alternating solo works with the vocalist (this will give each of you a nice rest as well) - you could even transcribe some Strauss or Mahler songs to include some Romantic fare.

- Transcribing vocal duets or vocal/instrumental duets from the Classical/Romantic era.

- Contrasting styles within a given time period. 20th/21st century music is incredibly varied - the Tiefenbach you mentioned is a very pretty/tonal piece that would contrast well with some harder-edged contemporary music.

ps. I would offer to scan the Tiefenbach and email it to you, but unfortunately I'm traveling until the end of August. If you still haven't found it by then send me a pm.

Aaron,

First and foremost, thanks for the offer to scan the Tiefenbach. I'd prefer to purchase a copy and I'll try again to contact Peter as we get closer to the school year, but if I don't get a reply, I'll take you up on that.

As for the content of the recital, the soprano and I gave a couple of performances last year of a recital which fit the format you describe. The desire to find works from the classical and romantic periods doesn't come from a knee-jerk desire as a trumpeter to "cover all the bases". What we were hoping to do is develop a lecture/recital program and as a composer/educator, I was interested in seeing if there was a discernible evolution in how composers treated the soprano/trumpet duo.

I knew there wasn't any standard rep. from those time periods, or else I think I would know about the works, but I'm hoping that someone might know about some hidden gems.

Thanks again,
Richard

I have a piece that is 20th/21st century - (I wrote it about 10 years ago) - BUT it sounds like Mahler/Strauss. It was originally for just soprano/piano, but Bill Campbell at U of M suggested giving the trumpet the melody.

He performed it with his wife, and I have a recording on my website.

Go to http://www.stephensonmusic.com/cmpbras.htm#trumpet-w-keyboard
and scroll down to "Walk Slowly" where you can mouse-over the title to hear the piece.

Perhaps this might work for you.
Thanks,
Jim

I know the initial posting was a few years ago, but has anybody been able to obtain a copy Tiefenbach's "Three Poems" since then? I have looked everywhere online and have emailed him but have had no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am doing a program with a singer this summer and she really wants to include this piece. Thank you!

Rossini's Cat duet (with you using a harmon mute) could be fun. It is on imslp.org.

A big romantic style trumpet solo is the Peskin #1 in C Minor. It's an incredible piece. And boy is it choppy, sometimes in surprising ways! Strongly recommended if you want something big, Russian, and heavy for your recital.

Peter,

Thanks for your list of suggestions from Hickey's. I am familiar with some of those pieces, but definitely not all. Do you have or know or any recordings of the Friedman or Reed? I can't seem to find any, but I would like to hear the pieces (or part of them) before making a decision. Thanks again for your help!

And I do appreciate all of the other suggestions as well. I will definitely look into everything you recommended.

Thank you,
Aric

I will see what is available and will let you know. Hopefully some of the readers will have suggestions. Some of the pieces I listed have sample pages. Click on the link to read the description and look for a green "look inside" button. I am going to put the others on my list to add sample pages asap. A few of the pieces are new to me, so am going to check them out. - Pete

Listen to Tine Thing Helseth's StoryTeller Cd and make your own transcription for Trumpet if you like any of the repertoire.

Otherwise, there's quite a number of Dokshitser arrangements of Chopin and Debussy etc.

Update from a post over a year ago: I contacted Peter Tiefenbach and was able to purchase a copy of his "Three Poems" directly from him. PM me if you would like his contact information.
