I heard good thinks about the Wiseman model 600 flugel. Apparently there is much more copper in its bell than the 300. Can anyone tell me what copper has to do with the horn's sound?
Thanks

There are a few reasons why a maker might up the copper content in their horns.

It resists red rot (which is not so much of an issue with a bell). It looks good.

It also tends to emphasise the lower frequency overtones and, all other things being equal, would have a "darker" sound, or in other words, less "zing".

Keep in mind that the Bell material is only ONE factor in how a horn sounds or responds.

For a flugel, a copper bell will make it sound more "flugely" than a yellow brass bell.

Personally I love copper - my Yam YTR634 has a copper leadpipe and bell and is a great horn that can get a real Committee-like sound. My 1525 flugel is also nearly all copper, and is a real gem.

I'm sure more scientifically minded people will chime in with better information, but that's my 2c, FWIW

I have a Wisemann Pocket Trumpet, a nice horn.

Cheers,
Roger

The Wiseman 600 is sold by Dan Fisher at DF-Music. It appears to be an instrument with a rose brass bell, priced at $435, including a nice medium deep Wick 3BFl mouthpiece and a canvas case. There is no further technical information on the web site, but the use of the Wick 3BFl suggests this horn uses the large Yammaha taper.

I found a short video clip of the Wiseman 600... From it, I would say that the description of this tone by Mr. Fisher is spot on.... "Dark and colorful".... I would also add expressive and lirical... Quite lovely, actually,
particularly considering its very reasonable price!

Dan is a super nice gentlement... Give him a buzz: tel: 630-267-9828

Amongst other things, Dan is a real specialist in Wick mouthpieces... If you decide to purchase this flugel, you might as well add the wonderful Wick 3Fl deep and darkly toned flugel mouthpiece to your order... You won't regret it.

More pics here -

Looks very similar to the Weril Flug I used to have - which was a very nice horn and easy to switch to from trumpet.

Doesn't mention the taper, but given it's a Chinese horn I'd wager it's the standard (Yamaha) taper.

Cheers, and good like with your decision/purchase!

Roger
