How can I change the file type of an audio file from wav to mp3? I don't want to download any programs to do this though. So if there are any suggests (download free ones ) it would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if media player does it directly but you can burn a CD using the .wav file and then rip the CD using media player.

There are probably better ways to do it.

itunes will allow you to do it. Just go to itunes > Preferences. Click Advanced. Go to the import menu, choose the encoding you want and click ok. Then go to Advanced > Convert Selection to MP3.

I remember doing this exact thing some 4 years ago with a program that I can not remember now. As someone stated itunes can do this for you. But if you just want an audio conversion program I would go to http://www.download.com and search audio converter or wav to mp3 and I am sure you can find something suitable.

With some converting program, you can convert videos/audio to MP3 easily. Also, there is the method on how to do this converion in detail
http://www.videoconverterfactory.com/tips/wav-to-mp3.html
it can reduce the damage as much as possible. As you know, MP3 is lossy audio encoder so sometime the conversion may be despressing.

I've used Audacity. It's free and open source and it's very good for a number of things.

You'll have to download it. Not sure why that's a problem. If you want to do something you need the right tool. If you want to pound nails, go grab a hammer. Don't grab a ruler. You want to convert an audio file? Use an audio program.

I wonder if he figured it out in the eleven years since he asked the question?
