If you could only have one Dizzy album/CD, which one would it be? Technical quality of the recording is important to me.
I'm filling in my jazz knowledge.
Warm regards,

Dizzy was amazing in his prime. I caught him live two times in his later years. He was a little hit or miss chops wise as he aged. I was lucky, both nights I saw him he was in good form.
First time I saw him was in a club and I was sitting in front. He looks at during one of his solos and crosses his eyes!
One more quick story. My mother had a knack for always running into some celebrity whenever she was in an airport. She's in Cleveland Airport and sees Dizzy and his band. My mom was a little Italian who looked like the actress who played the mother on Everybody Loves Raymond. She goes up, taps him on the shoulder and says excuse me, are you Dizzy? He looks at her and said. No mam, I feel fine. He started laughing and they talked for a few minutes. She said he was a nice guy. She always remarked that he was wearing leather pants! |

Thanks guys. I'll put both those CDs on my "to get" list. I am just now discovering Dizzy. I knew of him before, of course, but only recently have I begun to explore his recordings. I am really enjoying the recordings.
Warm regards,

There are so many phenomenal musicians and so much great music on this .... But, if you are looking for great playing by Dizzy this is not what you want. It was only months before his death (if I remember correctly) and you can definitely tell it in his playing. Again though, I highly recommend it for the others playing on it (Claudio Roditi and Arturo!!!)
My vote to the OP would be Sonny Side Up or Dizzy for President!!! _________________ Van Laar B6

Last year I took in Dizzy's autobiography, "To Be Or Not... To Bop," and listened along to his recordings as they were mentioned in the book. What a learning experience.
I love Dizzy's duet album with Oscar Peterson. Holy Moly!
His solo on "UMMG" on Duke Ellington's 'Jazz Party' is superb, and justifiably famous.
And I'd offer another vote for "Have Trumpet, Will Excite!" That version of "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" is simply sublime. _________________ Yamaha 8310Z trumpet
