I once saw a photo of Schilke in a suit playing his trumpet in a train yard. Anyone here have a copy of it you would share online?

Sorry, I don't have nor have I ever seen that picture. Would love to though! You misspelled Schilke's name in the title of your topic thread. As the OP you can edit that and correct it. |

There are two photos of Schilke in the train yard on that tour, both taken with Frank Crisafulli (trombone). I found them years ago on a trombone players web page, but don't see that they are available anymore. I'm sure if you contact the CSO Archives with the search criteria Schilke Crisafulli 1940 you will find both photos. They're both balancing on a big piece of the track off the main line beside the train.

Nice! Thanks for finding those. In the second photo it looks like his hand is in the bell, but it's just Crisafulli's slide hand.

Wow! Cool pics! That's when Mr Schilke was playing a Besson Meha with a .470 bore. He actually sold that horn and Bud Brisbois played it for a while. This was shortly before Schilke began making his own line of amazing Trumpets. He also played a Holton for a bit too... |

If I'm remembering right, he and Llewelyn used to go up to the Holton factory to look at trumpets. I think that's where the Holton Llewelyn model came from...that horn plays a little like a Committee...I had a very nice 1928 gold plated model that was engraved all the way back to the bell bow and Rich Ita tried it and made that remark about how it played. I had had the horn restored by Ron Pinc, who worked with Schilke at his factory before striking out on his own, and Ron was familiar with the horn from having worked with Schilke...it's a small world. _________________ royjohn

I've often looked at photos from this era and really wished that I could have been there. Was certainly a "golden age" of orchestral trumpet playing...not that we don't have fantastic players now, but it certainly evokes a sense of reverence within me. _________________ Please join me as well at:
