Mike Paulson IS fantastic! We are very lucky to have him here in Seattle and I am lucky to live 15 blocks from his shop. He has a nack for making any horn play better, partly because he is/was a dues-paid professional trumpet player. A lifetime of tinkering has given him some great skills tweaking horns. I have play tested most of the horns he has put together in the last 3 years and they were all fanstastic. Can't say enough good things about him. Not necessarily the guy to do a full restoration on a horn, but a guy who is great a customizing and tweaking horns, with some very unique ideas.
He uses parts from various manufacturers for his own horns, and makes some parts himself. He really knows what works from a pracical point of view because he has played the thing for a living, (back when people did that!). I highly recommend going to his shop if ever in Seattle. It's often the scene of a great trumpet players hang. In his display case right now is a pristine Olds Recording, Martin Committee, Schilke S22, Chicago Benge, Bach 37, Calicchio 2-2, and a few of his horns. It's like being a kid in a candy store. _________________ www.thomasmarriott.net |

He has the BEST stories too, on the phone, within 10 minutes he told me about being at the Olds closing auction in 1979, then a great ditty about Dominic (Callicchio ) picking out brass blanks on a truck by "dinging" the sheets of brass (he sent the truck back because he didn't like the way they sounded) _________________ "There is no necessity for deadly strife" A. Mike Paulson closed his shop in late 2021 following a stroke. His website is still up but it hasn’t been updated in years. The last time I tried calling his shop phone number, it was deactivated.
You can try contacting Mike or his wife Rae Ann through Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mikepaulson.brassmasters |
