If I wanted to take regular lessons (say, once or twice a month) with a classical trumpet teacher in Southern California (anywhere between LA and San Diego), who would you suggest? I know there are many great players, but I suspect a number of those who are associated with local universities probably don't have the time to teach a non-matriculated student.
My goal would be to get to the level where I can play with a semi-professional classical group. _________________ Please join me as well at:

Pre March 2020, I would have certainly recommended either Frank Glasson or John Wilds.
Since Covid, I have no idea what they're doing with regard to private lessons. |

I can definitely recommend Grant Hungerford. He's principal trumpet of the Burbank Philharmonic and taught at UC Santa Barbara for a long time. I took lessons with him for 5 years while I was at UC Santa Barbara, and he's a phenomenal teacher. |

I would not make this an assumption in your list of possibilities. I know of teachers who take students outside of the universities they teach at. You should let them say "No", not you before you even ask.
Keep in mind, these university teachers all have strong performance backgrounds with an extensive network you could tap into. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Frank Glasson was my teacher for many years, and is still active. Definitely recommend him! He is a great player and teacher who plays often with the Pacific Symphony and San Diego Symphony. He is located in Solana Beach. |
