The holiday traffic and parking/shopping madness rapidly faded in the rearview mirror as we left our suburban home embarking on a 2 hour rural, flash from the past, rejecting the Interstate snarl and road rage that my wife and I just can’t avoid during much of our daily lives for the oh so welcomed quietude of our farmhouse seclusion located on the family 200 acre farm retreat! We are here until the New Year appears.

After getting the pantry restocked, bags unpacked, meals planned, and spending a little time with our daughters and family, the draw of fresh air and sunshine that goes along with winter in the Deep South, drew us to the back porch for our daily afternoon trumpet practice and the wide open spaces especially enjoying the southerly breeze and the lower 70s temps! There is just something about the sound that nature imparts to brass and not even family members in the nearest of their homes can really hear us enough to intrude on their peace.

Then, a nice healthy lunch, a long walk down a real country road much like time travel to a distant past and reflective conversation with my wife about her many walks and experiences on this same patch of ground, back to the house and preparation for tonight’s annual large family holiday get together! Lots of fun, food, and conversation! Life is good!

Too soon, we will be back to our city neighborhood environment and pine for the next long weekend or holiday. In the meantime, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

Life is Short! Find the Joy in it!

Mike
