Does gold give a mouthpiece a warmer sound...or is it just more slippery?
Thanks,
Ken |

Kennyg2019 - I personally do not detect any change in tone and do not find the gold vs silver identical mouthpieces more slippery. Before I bought the gold mouthpieces, others on TH commented that the gold plating was slightly more slippery. I was prepared for this difference, but did not experience it. Basically, as has been stated many times here on many subjects, it will depend on the individual.

Hi Ken,
If do a google search for...
gold plated mouthpieces site:trumpetherald.com
...you'll find several previous threads on the subject.
Some players say that gold:
1. warms up faster to the temperature of the lips and maintains that temperature longer than silver after removing from the lips.
2. feels slipperier and/or wetter on the lips.
3. offers a slightly warmer sound. |

I personally find gold to have a warmer sound and more slippery feel, where silver is brighter with a more secure feel.
Gold rim and inside with silver outside gives a slippier feel, but with the sound of the silver. |

I have never perceived an effect of different surfaces, either on mouthpieces or horns. _________________ 2019 Martin Schmidt eXcellence

I’ve noticed that gold plated mouthpieces don’t feel as “sticky” as silver plated ones, but I seriously doubt there’s any perceptible difference in sound. I have both and like the gold ones a little better, but not enough to have my silver ones plated with gold. _________________ "Brass bands are all very well in their place - outdoors and several miles away ." - Sir Thomas Beecham |

I have gold and silver mouthpieces with the same rim sizes, but haven't noticed a big difference. I'm not a "dry" player but I also don't wet my lips a whole lot--I'm somewhere in between. _________________ Bryan Fields

I don't think there is enough material (gold) added to a mouthpiece to change the way it plays. Definitely changes the feel.
Gold is warmer, becomes warm, to the feel on the chops, a little faster and is a little more slippery.
The only times I've noticed the difference while playing is when it's hot and I'm sweating more than normal (outdoors on a hot humid day).. then a gold mouthpiece will feel much more slippery-not necessarily a good thing. _________________ Freelance Performer/Educator
