Hey, if I knew the name, I'd search for it!

I'm talking about they way that lead players or soloists chop off the end of a high note, sometimes when pulling the horn off the mouth, like Maynard.

... like this below. Earlier in the clip, he ends a high note cleanly, but he does the thing here. Does it have a name?

Often called a "kiss-off."

A few years ago, Nick Marchione did a You Tube video discussing this topic. You might search for his name and see if you can find it. As I recall, he did it rather humorously.

Love it. Loved the "Vodka" pour.

Nick is clearly enjoying the sound of his own voice in that video. He thinks he's very funny. Clearly.

Anyway, it's a kiss-off. Nick can refer to it anyway he likes. My trumpet teacher in college explained that it's a terrible habit and that you should simply stop breathing when you are done. I played a lot with a local "legend" lead trumpet player who when questioned about adding a kiss-off to a note, didn't seem to even know they were doing it....on every single last high note of the gig.

I'm not ever going to be a lead player, but I've heard it called a 'cha'.

True?

Oops - never mind; yes, the video linked above calls it that.

I asked because, while I can choose to kiss-off or not, in one concert band rehearsal, I thought I'd try it at the end of a long high (not super) C.

Boy, did it impress the flute section.

So I noted that it's an effect that some people like, and seems to make the note sound more ... difficult, or something. I'll ask the conductor if she wants it, as I have no attachment to doing it or not. It's just an effect, eh?
