Bought a Jupiter 520 M Shepherd's crook cornet yesterday. Playing on a Yamaha 14 e mouthpiece.

What mouthpiece would give me a more traditional sound?

The Jupiter 520 is an introductory cornet. The Yamaha 14E is a dedicated "traditional" style, British-style short shank cornet mouthpiece. That combination is about as good as it gets for that horn. The block is the same as their trumpet blocks, .460, so you won't be getting a "big" sound out of it.

Thanks for the information. I am happy with the cornet and mouthpiece.

Looking for a lyrical soft mellow sound.

Hi Jon, how does the Jupiter+Yammy mp combination falls short of your expectations?

WHat is its tone, and what tone would you like to achieve instead?

I fear that the term "traditional" might a bit broad, and might mean slightly different things to different people.

Regards, G.

Looking for a lyrical soft mellow sound.

Your current mouthpiece - 14E - should be able to do that quite well.

The mouthpiece is only part of the equation for the sound coming out of your bell - the other major parts being the horn and you (with the latter being the most important).

With the myriad equipment choices available nowadays on the web and discussed in forums such as these, it's easy to assume that it plays a major part in your playing and your sound. While it's certainly part of it, the major part is the person playing the horn. It always has been and always will be.

If you want a more lyrical, soft, mellow sound - then work on having the sound you want.

True enough... The player is the primary factor in the creation of a lyrical tone. On the other hand, I found some mouthpieces to have more affinity to my own concept of a lyrical tone....

FliP Oakes Xtreme cornet piece.
All the Curry cornet pieces, including -- amazingly enough -- the relatively shallower DC.
Kanstul FB -- This one is technically a flugel piece with Bach taper... Amazing on the cornet, gives it a slight flavor of "French horn".
Griego CS Fl -- Another flugel piece in morse taper... Incredibly expressive on my Carolbrass CCR-7772R... Perhaps my prefered MP on the cornet.

But in the end... It is only we who can create the magic... We can succeed or we can fail, probably with most mouthpieces.

G.

Received the cornet today. Haven't played it much.Busy day.

Was using this mouthpiece on a Bach CR 300 cornet. Which worked very well. Actually very happy with the new setup. Looking forward
to playing it this weekend,

Thanks. I received great advice today.

Definitely need to stop being an equipment geek.

Resurrecting an old thread. Got a good deal on ebay for a Jupiter 520 M Shepherds crook cornet. The finish looks a little worn in some areas, but that doesn't concern me.
Before my comeback I did own a Jupiter 520M shephards crook cornet. Did regret selling that cornet.I will receive the Jupiter 520 M cornet soon. It comes with a Jupiter 9e cornet mouthpiece. Looking forward to comparing the Jupiter cornet with the Yamaha 2330 cornet.

I'm looking up Jupiter cornet threads because I think that's a good brand for my requirements.

If I'm reading this correctly, you had the J 520M back in 2017. Sold it, regretfully.

Recently you acquired a different, new to you J 520M cornet, and compared it to an existing Yamaha 2330 cornet. Judging from your signature, the Yamaha cornet was less interesting than the replacement J 520M.

FWIW, and quite anecdotal, but I yet to read of a Yamaha cornet beating its class and era equivalent Jupiter or KING Cleveland or CONN Director cornet on the SOUND basis. Mind, these were all entry-level entities. And I think all used horns.

I don't recall if the subject Jupiter cornets were always shephards crook editions. That factor would definitely be a salient variable given that the effect of the shephards crook tubing is itself a discussion point.

Should I get a shephards crook edition Jupiter cornet to experience the best cornet sound?
