...in DeKalb, IL, West of Chicago, has an excellent marching band and a great music department, including a terrific jazz program with instructors like Art Davis, one of Chicago's busiest trumpeters.

NIU has a great Jazz Ensemble founded in 1969 by Ron Modell. He directed the Jazz Ensemble until around 1997. The Jazz Studies program at NIU is pretty famous. Staff professors include Ronald Carter (sax) director of the program, Willie Pickens (piano), Art Davis (trumpet), Steve Duke (sax), Robert Chappell (percussion & piano), Tom Garling (arranging / trombone) among other greats.
Anyone interested in a degree in music performance with an emphasis in jazz couldn't go wrong checking out this program.

| I actually am thinking of going there and then transfering to Berklee after I get general ed and some more music work out of the way. |
