I received a message today from Mary Beveridge at the Kansas City Public Library. She has provided me with the information that I needed to complete the list for the KC Symphony / Philharmonic. I will open the final folder for this group soon. Another one complete!

Dear Mr. Reaban,

I am writing in response to your question about principal trumpets with the KCPhilharmonic. They don’t indicate principals in the programs so I’m assuming that the first person named is the principal. They seem to fit with the years you have:

1933-34 Wendell Adair
1934-35 “
1937-38 “
1942-43 Leopold Potter
1952-53 Herbert Mueller

I hope this helps.

I received a message from Joe Cahn at the Denver Public Library today. He was able to fill in many of the details for the Denver Symphony Orchestra. I still have a gap from 1990 – 2000 that I hope to complete when I hear back from the Colorado Symphony. This list is mostly complete now!

Does anyone have an email address for Dan Kuehn? I found a reference on Doc’s page about the Destino Trumpets that Dan has played with the Colorado Symphony for 28 years. I’m sure he could help me fill in the details from the 90s.

Dear Mr. Reaban,

Thank you for your inquiry. I hope the Colorado Symphony Orchestra will help you identify all of the principal trumpeters for the 1990s. (Our holdings of programs from that period are scattered.)

Manual Araujo was mentioned as principal trumpeter in the Denver Post of March 20, 1992, and as a soloist as early as October 20, 1990. We have programs showing that Araujo led the trumpet section in 1996-97 and 1997-98. The reorganized Colorado Symphony's first concert took place in the fall of 1989.

Here are details about the Denver Symphony's first four decades.

Harry M. Jellen occupied that chair for the 1956-57 season.

Edwin Lenicheck was principal trumpeter from 1942 until 1954.

B. Jollivette (sometimes spelled with only one L) had that role from
1936 until 1942.

John S. Leick was principal trumpeter from 1924 until 1935.

F. Heusgen seems to have had the first chair during the 1923-24 season, but a footnote in the program said he was added for balance (or words to that effect). Leick also played trumpet that season.

L. De Sciose was principal trumpeter during the first season, 1922-23.

I hope this answers your question. Thanks again for using Ask a Librarian.

Sincerely,

Joe Cahn
Reference Librarian

I’ve been thinking about the next ensembles to add to our lists. I heard the Gewandhaus Orchestra live in Tempe in the early 90s with Kurt Masur and they certainly need to be on our list. Teatro Alla Scala needs to be represented, Boston Pops, New York City Opera, New York City Ballet and other orchestras that people have contributed here. Here's a start for some of these ensembles.

I received a message from Wilmer this morning with details about the NYC Opera and Ballet Orchestras. Now that I have a good start for these I can contact the players for their individual dates and then contact either the archives or public libraries to fill in the remaining gaps. Great start on these lists!

Quote:

Hi Derek,
Phil Ruecktenwald was the principal player at the NYC Opera before Don Batchelder. I think Tom Lisenbee preceded Phil.

Bob Haley was principal at the NYC Ballet before Ray and Neil. Ron Anderson preceded Bob. Teddy Weis preceded Bob......I think.

This is just a start for this ensemble. I reviewed the Douglas Yeo article about the Boston Symphony from the December 1990 ITG Journal and was able to find some information for names and dates. The dates for Tim Morrison came from the attached reference and the Douglas Yeo article mentioned that Charles Daval was principal with the Pops for the entire time that he was in Boston.

I received messages from Ray Mase, Neil Baum, and Don Batchelder this weekend with further details about the NYC Ballet and Opera Orchestras. I have start dates for the current principals and contact information to follow-up with past principals. When I have heard back from these players I will update these lists. I’m making good progress here.

Derek, here's the lastest news I got from archives of the Nashville Symphony.

--William

William--I have come across only two changes in the trumpet roster.  One of them was the one you pointed out--

Pat McGuffey was listed as Principal from 1982-83 through 1990-91.  And Sammy Swor is listed as First in 1952-53.

Otherwise the list is as sent in November.  Hope this answers your questions.  Barbara

William,

Thanks for the additional details on the Principal players with The Nashville Symphony. I looked back on Page 14 of this folder and found the information that you received from The Nashville Symphony. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any listing of principal players prior to the recent information that you received.

Could you check with them again and ask who the players were in the principal chair from 1946-1952 and from 1953-1982? With this information, this ensemble would be complete!

Thanks!

I have had some conversations with Bruce Revesz (trumpet with the NYC Opera for many years), Don Batchelder, and Bob Haley. I have made very good progress with these lists. I still need to contact Ron Anderson (I have a phone number) and need to hear back from Tom Lisenbee, but I think I have sufficient information to contact the archives and / or public library to see if they may have past programs and can provide additional information.

I received a great message from Tom Lisenbee today who was Principal Trumpet with the NYC Opera Orchestra for many years. There are just some minor overlaps in dates compared to what I received from Bruce Revesz. I’m going to send Tom a response back about Armando Ghitalla who I know was in the NYC Opera Orchestra’s based on an ITG reference that I found as well as confirmation from Bruce Revesz.

I have sent messages to the NYC Opera and Ballet to see if their Archive department can help me finalize this information. It’s great to have these ensembles almost complete!

Derek.....Sorry to take so long to reply. The very first First Trumpet in the New York City Opera orchestra was Arthur Stadler. I think the City Opera was formed just after WWII, in 1945 or 46. At this time the opera performed at City Center and the orchestra was more or less the house orchestra for the theater (which included the New York City Ballet.) Art was first trumpet for no more than a year or two before he was replaced by Theodore Weis. Ted was first trumpet of both the NYC Ballet and Opera until 1965 when Lincoln Center opened and the NYC Ballet moved to the NY State Theater. The musicians were no longer able to hold both jobs at this time so Ted Weis resigned from the Opera orchestra and that's when Fred Mills took over the job. Fred was first trumpet until he left in 1969 to go to Canada and the National Arts Orchestra in Ottawa (and then later of course to the Canadian Brass.) The City Opera moved to Lincoln Center too during the time Fred was first trumpeter. When Fred left Ted Weis rejoined the orchestra and was its first trumpet until he suffered a heart attack in 1976 and I took over. (When Ted was better he came back as Assistant Personal Manager and Third.) I played first trumpet until 1994 when Phil Reucktenwald moved to first and I became second.

That's about it. For the exact dates you should probably check with Dave Titcomb the current personnel manager of the NYC Opera orchestra. There may be some discrepancies in the exact dates of my tenure due to the fact that there was some doubt at the beginning as to whether Ted Weis would ever make it back (which he didn't) but rest assured I was the principal player from 1976 to 94.

I'm curious about your project. Can you tell me more?

Yours......tom (lisenbee)

I received a message from Sidney Laramie a Librarian in the Special Collections Department of the San Diego Public Library. With the exception of the 1981-1982 Season and the early years of the SDSO (1913-1940) this ensemble is nearly complete. Can anyone help me with 1981-82?

Hello,

The information I found re. the symphony's principal trumpet players is listed below. It is incomplete because the dates of the symphony programs we hold are scattered throughout the years. When the program dates were close together I didn't look at all of the programs; when they were spread out over a year I tried to check each one. I have noted the specific designation for a musician when one was given; otherwise I have listed the trumpet player whose name appeared first in the program.

7/14/1931 - 8/25/1931 H. A. Moody Listed 1st

7/19/1932 - 8/09/1932 H.A. Moody Listed 1st

7/18/1933 Perry De Long Listed 1st
7/25/1933 Henry Simpson Listed 1st(Perry De Long listed 1st under trombones.)
8/01/1933 Perry De Long Listed 1st

7/24/1934 - 8/21/1934 Perry De Long Listed 1st

7/12/1936 - 8/08/1936 "Programs" consisted of only 1 sheet. No names of musicians.

7/13/1937 - 8/17/1937 Have some folded sheets labeled "S.D. Symphony Concert News." They appear to be programs. No names of musicians.

4/11/1938 No names of musicians.

7/11/1939 No names of musicians. (Name of symphony - The S.D. Federal Symphony Orchestra)
8/11/1939 Horace Moody Listed 1st

7/12/1940 - 8/13/1940 Perry De Long Listed 1st

8/09/1949 - 9/06/1949 Gabriel Bartold Listed 1st

1/10/1980 - 4/05/1980 Glen Fischthal & Tim Lawler Co-principals. Fischthal listed 1st.
11/5/1980 Tim Lawler Principal
12/4/1980 - 12/5/1980 Mark Bedell Listed 1st

11/15/1984 - 12/16/1984 Alan Siebert Principal

1/10/1985 Alan Siebert Principal
1/24/1985 - 1/25/1985 Alan Siebert Listed 1st
3/28/1985 - 3/29/1985 Ed Carroll Acting Principal
4/03/1985 - 4/21/1985 Ed Carroll, Glen Fischthal, & Lee Soper All 3 listed as acting principals. Carroll listed 1st.
5/09/1985 - 5/12/1985 Lee Soper & Edward Carroll Acting principals. Soper listed 1st.
5/16/1985 - 5/19/1985 Edward Carroll Acting principal
5/30/1985 - 6/6/1985 Edward Carroll & Timothy Lawler

Re. the years the symphony wasn't in operation -

Articles from "The San Diego Union":

02/08/1942 C p.4 "Ford Bowl not available for summer concerts. Another location sought."
03/10/1942 B p.10 "Midsummer Night concerts will not be presented this year."

An article from "Today in Music", Aug. 1-15 1969, states, "After an eight year suspension beginning in 1941 due to the military use of
Balboa Park during World War II, the orchestra returned to Balboa Bowl in 1949...."

I hope this research will be of some assistance to you. I suspect one could obtain more information from looking through old newspaper articles. Unfortunately, our staffing level prohibits me from spending any more time on this question. If you would like to hire someone to pursue this further please let us know and we will send you a list of researchers you can hire.

Sincerely,

Sidney Laramie

I received a message from Myron Patterson who is the Music Librarian and Adjunct Associate Professor of Music at the University of Utah. He was able to find additional information about the Utah Symphony to add to our list.

Derek,

This is the information I have been able to retrieve from Special Collections files in storage.

The information is taken from Utah Symphony programs.

Trumpets in order of listing in Saturday, November 8, 1947 program

Stewart Grow
Sheldon Hyde
Keith Smith

Saturday, December 13, 1947 program

Stewart Grow
Sheldon Hyde
Keith Smith
Harold Sharp

The following two entries are from Utah State Symphony Orchestra programs. I haven't been able to determine if the Utah State Symphony Orchestra is the same as the Utah Symphony Orchestra. It is possible that this may have been an earlier name.

Trumpets in order of listing March 6 and 7, 1945 program

Clyde C. White
Harold Sharp

Trumpets in order of listing March 29 and 30, 1946 program

Clyde C. White
Harold Sharp
Ralph French

In none of the programs is there any specific information indicating who is the principal trumpeter. Perhaps the order of listing is the protocol for determing this; however, it seems as if this order is alphabetical in some cases as can be seen.

I hope this helps.

I received a message from Erich Graf (Principal Flute with the Utah Symphony and President of the Local Music Union), and he is looking into my request to complete the list for the Utah Symphony. I have an additional name to add to the list based on a program that he found from 1947.

Dear Derek,

I have turned your request over to my Secretary-Treasurer, Tony Brazelton, at the Local. The Local has moved many times since the 40's, and there are some "gaps" in membership history. Here's one piece of information. I spoke to Bill Sullivan, our principal trumpet from the 50's until the early 80's. He found an old program from 1947 that lists the trumpet section as:

Ralph French
Clyde White
Harold Sharp
Dean Alsop

Bill told me that in the old days, the principal was listed "first". It could be that one of the other three served as principal during the time frame that you have queried. As you can understand, institutional history of that era is vague, since it was before the tenure of Maurice Abravanel.

I have asked Tony to respond to you, but I'm afraid that if he is unable to locate additional information, we are stymied.

I hope this information helps.

Sincerely,

Erich Graf

Lot’s of players early in the last century seemed to change their names when they came to the United States. I don’t know if this is the case with Sydney Baker (from the Dec 1983 ITG Journal article on the CSO) and the Ernest S. Williams references that you found for Sidney Beckerman. I’ll side with the ITG reference for now.

Since Sydney Baker, known to me as Dad, is alive & well, I'll pass this note along to him (well, to Mom who has the email account)

Dad changed his name from Sidney Beckerman in 1939, because he didn't want to have a German-sounding last name, as it appeared there was another war against Germany beginning. He was born in New York, I think on the Lower East Side, in 1921.

There is another Sidney Beckerman, who is his first cousin, a clarinetist who has trained a number of the current klezmer revivalists. Sidney gets it honestly, from his father (Shlomke Beckerman) and grandfather (Baruch Beckerman). There are other Sidney Beckermans, including a Hollywood producer, that are not related, to the best of our knowledge.

Derek Reaban wrote:
I found a reference to Edwin Franko Goldman (I can’t seem to find it right now) showing him as the Principal Cornet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Since our list is specifically for Principal Trumpet players, I don’t think he should be on this list, but would certainly be on the section players list if someone chooses to develop it.

Dad was the cornet soloist with the Goldman Band under Richard Franko Goldman and Ainslee Cox, from about 1965-1976. He also played trumpet in the Metropolitan Opera, for stage numbers (Aida, La Boheme, etc.) during the same period.

Jon,

Thanks so much for clarifying the name change for your Dad. If you haven’t had a chance to look at the completed folder for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Trumpet Section, please click on this link. I would love to add a bio “post” with the details of your Father’s career. If you would be able to post a picture of him on your web site, I could provide a link to the “bio” folder along with whatever details that you could provide.

I have updated the CSO folder to show your Dad’s given name for completeness, as well as added your post above in that same folder.

Thanks! Looking forward to hearing from you again!

Dad also confirms that Schlossberg was 2nd chair in the NYP, moving down to 4th after a while. Through much of that period, the principals were his students. Dad studied with Schlossberg until Schlossberg died, just before Dad started at Juilliard (1936). He then studied with Williams for 2 years, while fighting some kind of political battle to get in with Vacchiano. Finally, in his third year, he studied with Vacchiano, who was 3rd chair in NYP at the time. Williams was an old man who kept falling asleep during lessons, and Dad wanted someone more dynamic.

Harry Glantz was his cousin by marriage - a lot of orchestra players were related to him. His mother's family was known as the Philharmonic Fishbergs, because from 1916-1970, there were 1-6 members of the family in the NYP and its predecessor orchestras. Dad regards him as the greatest trumpet player of the century. Dad's father, Harry Beckerman, played sax with the NYP from 1916 onwards when they needed one, and the last was Dad's cousin Jack Fishberg, who retired in 1970. Find the Halloween 1949 issue of the New Yorker for an extended article about the family.

I note some Gusikoffs in your lists - back in Volhynia, in the 19th century, Beckerman's and Gusikoff's orchestras used to compete for the same wedding business.

Beckerman and Fishberg were all the same family, except that Great-Grandpa Fishberg changed his name from Beckerman to avoid the Russian draft in, oh, 1864 or so.

After leaving Chicago, and meeting his first wife, Dad played in the Radio City Music Hall orchestra, and various Broadway plays, including the entire run of My Fair Lady. He spent a lot of time reading in the orchestra pit, catching up on the liberal-arts education that Juilliard didn't yet offer.

He started teaching in the NYC public schools when my sister was born in 1953. His first wife died, he met my mother in 1963, and cut back from two full-time jobs (school and theatre) to 1.5 - school and Met Opera, with Goldman Band in the summer. He pretty much stopped performing around 1976 or so, and retired from Laguardia HS for Music and the Arts in 1989. Lately, he has become an amateur cantor, and plays recorder, sometimes leading an amateur group at the Teachers Union.

If you want to talk to him, he's in the phone book. We've had trouble convincing him to use the computer much.

When I was putting the player bios together for the Colorado / Denver Symphony I noticed that Stephen Chenette was Principal Trumpet of the Boston Pops in 1960. I’m waiting to hear back from someone at the Boston Pops to help complete this list, but I wanted to update it with this information while I was thinking about it.

I had two messages when I arrived at work today. The first from Beate Neunteufel-Zechner at Musiksammlung der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek in Vienna and the second from Stuart Robinson at the Halle Orchestra. It looks like the Vienna Philharmonic and the Halle Orchestra lists are now complete! I will open final folders for these ensembles in the near future.

Dear Mr. Reaban,
it was not so easy to carry together the informations you asked for. Not in every programm is a list of active Wiener Philharmoniker shown under their instruments. Especially in the time between 1842 and 1893 (in our collection) there almost only exist one leaf programmes (what we call: Handzettel). With life dates we cannot help - this would be an extraordinary research work for somebody who wants to make an anthology or bio-bibliography of trumpet players and would be here to meet people and to visit archives. Now to the results of my work:

This is my best guess for the Wiener Philharmoniker based on the information that I received from the ONB and the Wiener Philharmoniker. I have messages in to both people that helped with this information to see if I can get clarification on Josef Pomberger’s dates and Helmut Wobisch’s dates (the membership dates are correct, but I want the specific dates when they were in the principal chair).

If anyone has contact information for Josef Pomberger or could refer him to this message, that would be great!
