When I talked with my repairman, Larry Souza, after having my strad resilvered, he recommended staying away from a valve guard.
He recommended using isopropyl alchohol in a spritzer to clean the horn after use. This will remove all of the acidic deposits.
I will let you all know whether this works in about 10 years. |

I've been using "Leather Specialties" handguards for the past 6-7 years and I don't notice ANY ill effects when playing and I'm VERY sensitive to minor changes in all of my equipment. The ONLY difference I notice is that the horn is more comfortable to hold over a long period of time. Different strokes for...I guess!

We've had pretty good success using and selling the ProTec Leather Valve Guards, L-226. They have an internal membrane to guard against your sweaty hand migrating toward your valve cluster. They also have a velor lining that is next to the horn's finish.
Here's a link to see them: http://www.ptcases.com/alternate.asp?ImageID=731&ItemID=210&KeyboardID=210&PageID _________________ Lon A. Heim

Thanks kanstula-krazy. And on valve guards affecting playing I took mine off in rehersal the other day and didn't notice a difference. I was just planning on using it for practicing and rehersals. Not for performing. And taking it off when teh horn wasn't in use. _________________ You can have oodles of technique, but if you've got no tone, it's not going to be attractive to the person hearing it. I just got the valve guard today. And one word. Great.
The leather is completely waterproof the velvoa next to the valve casing is super soft. It is not bulky and fits the trumpet well. The velcro bonds very well too(not like some cheap velcro I've saw).
So if you ever need a valve guard for a spare horn or something look at this one. Its worth 10 dollars easily. _________________ You can have oodles of technique, but if you've got no tone, it's not going to be attractive to the person hearing it. I have one of these valve guards, too. I have never noticed a difference, but since my horn is older, the guard covers wear to the finish. I like it because nothing wears off onto the horn. _________________ My horn:
