I played the 6335J for a few years. Similar horn, but has a different bell flare to the 6335JII and had a rose brass bell. Eventually I out-grew it as I needed a more open, darker sounding horn for all-around and orchestral playing, and the 6335J was too much of a bright lead horn.

The 6335JII has the same bell flare as the standard 6335. From what I can work out, it is basically a price-reduced 6335 (two piece bell, plastic valve guides, though still built to Yamaha pro-quality), and plays a bit tighter and brighter. If that is the kind of thing you like, it is a good horn.

Oh, you're in Melbourne. If you haven't already, get on down to Brass and Woodwind in Ormond (they are 300m from the railway station). They stock a really good range of new and used horns, including all the Yamaha models, B&S, Jupiter, and some Kanstul and Bach models, and their staff are very knowledgable and helpful. They should have both the 6335J and 6335JII in stock to try (also had the Morrison Anniversary model when I was there last), and any number of other trumpets that you might like. Try as many different trumpets as you can.

Their prices on the non-Xeno Yamaha trumpets are the lowest in the world - don't know how they manage that...

Tell Brian I sent you. Website http://www.ozwinds.com.au/

Thanks mate! I'm actually a regular customer there.

The reason I asked is that they have recently got a second hand version of the trumpet of which we speak. Since I have a student who is looking to buy a trumpet, I thought I might see how they played...

(now, don't go and buy it out from under my nose! )

I have quite a few students on the 6335JII and it really is a wonderful horn.I played one myself as a student for quite a few years. Well made, nice warm sound, and the 6335II has a little less resistance than the original.I just checked the website and brassnwoodwind have 2 second hand in stock at fantastic prices (http://www.brassnwoodwind.com.au/trumpets.asp?status=used). You really could not find something better for a student at that price for all round playing.I would get them to snap them up, they will sell!!! (No, they are not my horns!!!)Brassnwoodwind is the best brass shop in Australia!!

I do play the JII. I asked James before bying it and he told me that the JII is a better horn for lead playing than the J, because the gold brass bell makes a bit brighter but still warm sound and the shape of the bell is the same as the standard. The bell of the J is more open what gives a less focused sound what and the red brass bell an even warmer sound. That's why this turmpet is perfect for solo work.
When I bought my JII I compared it with the Bobby Shew Z. I liked the JII better after a while. The sound was richer (and sure, the JII looks much better with the gold brass bell ;O)
I hadn't the chance to compare the JII with the standard, but I think think since the only difference is the material of the bell the JII should just sound a bit warmer, resitance, slotting a.s.p. should be the same.

Did anyone compare the JII with a Xeno???
