In a recent lesson my teacher suggested that I experiment with a pivot to improve my range. For background purposes I have been playing for about 1.5 years and I use a 1.25C mouthpiece. My reliable range is probably up to a G on top of the staff on an average day.

What is the best way for me to determine if the pivot will help? Any drills or tests I can use? Perhaps my limited range is simply a factor of being a beginner?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey Xeno!

Your best bet, considering your location, is to set up a lesson with Scotty Holbert with that specific purpose in mind. To the best of my knowledge, the Pivot System is a Doc Reinhardt concept and Scott is a teacher of the Reinhardt method. Email me and I'll give you his phone number, or better yet, I think that it's on his website at:

http://www.holbrass.com

or email him at:
Scott@holbrass.com

Scotty is a really nice guy and he's helped a lot of people develop their embouchures using the Reinhardt Pivot System. That's what I would do. (will do if I can ever convince my wife that I need to take lessons! )
