Derek Reaban

Jon Dante

A native Bostonian, Jon Paul Dante joined the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra as Principal Trumpet in 1999 after touring extensively throughout the United States and Japan for the previous decade with the internationally acclaimed Paramount Brass Quintet, a chamber ensemble of which he is both the founder and solo trumpet.

Also a frequent featured soloist with the New Mexico Symphony, Dante has served as Principal Trumpet for the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, the St. Cecilia Chamber Orchestra, the Boston Orchestra, the Berkshire Opera, and the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Colorado Music Festival, the Santa Fe Opera, and the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. As a music educator, Dante has held positions on the faculties of the Maryland Summer Center for the Arts, the North Shore Conservatory, the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and the Boston Conservatory of Music. Active also as a composer, he has written many works for both brass and piano.

Dante has performed with many distinguished artists ranging from Pavoratti to serving as principal trumpet for new age pianist and composer Yanni. In addition to releases on the Centaur Label with the Paramount Brass, Dante can be heard on two recent Summit Records releases which feature both Philip Smith and Joseph Alessi of the New York Philharmonic with the University of New Mexico Wind Symphony.

While the vast majority of Dante's performances are in the classical genre, he is the trumpeter for the acclaimed Albuquerque-based ska band ‘Danny Winn and the Earthlings’, and can also be found playing everything from salsa to Broadway at various different venues throughout the city.

Away from the trumpet, Dante enjoys playing golf, fixing things that are broken, surfing eBay, spending time with his cat 'Presto', and is an avid BMW car and motorcycle enthusiast.

Douglas C. Carlsen

Douglas C. Carlsen joined the Minnesota Orchestra as associate principal trumpet in September 1999, after playing with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra for seven years, most recently as principal trumpet. He has performed with the symphonies of Phoenix, Tucson and Santa Fe, as well as with the Summit Brass, National Repertory Orchestra, Banff Opera Orchestra, and the Chamber Orchestra of Albuquerque. Carlsen has spent summers at music festivals in the United States, Canada and Italy.

A native of Nebraska, Carlsen studied with David Hickman and Anthony Plog at Arizona State University. He has recorded Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Trumpets with David Hickman for Summit Records.

Robert Dorer

Robert Dorer joined the Minnesota Orchestra in 1997 after playing six seasons with the New Mexico Symphony, where he served as principal trumpet. He has also served as a member of the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra, Santa Fe Pro Musica, and Florida West Coast Symphony. Dorer has also performed as guest principal with the New Zealand Symphony. An avid chamber musician, Dorer performed throughout Florida for five years as a member of the Florida Brass Quintet. He is a graduate of Northwestern University where he studied with Vincent Cichowicz. Dorer enjoys teaching and was a member of the faculty of Brevard Music Center, in North Carolina, for seven summers.

Peter Bond

Peter Bond has been a member of the Metropolitan Opera trumpet section since 1992 and has a somewhat unusual musical background for an orchestra musician. Mr. Bond grew up playing in a junior drum and bugle corps in his hometown of Rockford, Illinois, later becoming a devotee of big band jazz in High School. Mr. Bond pursued his interest in big band playing at Western Illinois University, where he earned a BA in music. In 1980 he accepted an assistantship at Georgia State University in Atlanta, where he began serious study of classical playing with Atlanta Symphony principal trumpeter John Head. Mr. Bond received a master’s degree in performance in 1981 and remained in Atlanta for six years, working with the Atlanta Symphony, Atlanta Ballet, Charleston (SC) Symphony, brass quintets, and chamber groups. In 1987, Mr. Bond was appointed Principal Trumpet of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra in Albuquerque, where he remained until joining the Met Orchestra as second trumpet. In addition to a full schedule of opera and symphonic concerts, Mr. Bond also teaches one day a week at Rutgers University. In what could be viewed as coming full circle, Mr. Bond has spent the last several summers on the road, coaching the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps; the same youth group in which he played.

John Wilds

John Wilds is a native of Seattle. He is principal trumpet with the San Diego Opera Orchestra, San Diego Chamber Orchestra, and second trumpet with the San Diego Symphony. He has performed with the San Francisco Symphony, Santa Fe Opera Orchestra, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and was principal trumpet in the New Mexico Symphony and the Mississippi Symphony. Mr. Wilds received his earliest musical training from his father on the highland bagpipes. He received a Bachelor of Music degree and Performers Certificate from Indiana University School of Music. He has recorded for EMI, RCA, Naxos, and Koch International.

Kenneth Anderson

Kenneth Anderson was the Principal Trumpet with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra from 1951 to 1985 and a member of the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra from 1965 to 1993.

Mark Hyams

Mark Hyams joined the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra as Second Trumpet in December 2003, after winning the audition for the job in August 2003. Since August 2002, Mark has been Principal Trumpet of the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, and prior to this position, he was Third Trumpet for six years, beginning during his senior year at the University of Colorado at Boulder. In 1997 he graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance. In 1999 Mark took a one-year leave of absence from the BPO to study trumpet with Barbara Butler and Charles Geyer at Northwestern University, where he received his Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance in 2000. Mark is a former member of the the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra, a group that accompanies silent films, with which he can be heard on several soundtracks. While living in Boulder, Mark frequently performed with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and can be heard on serveral recordings with the group, including an upcoming release of Michael Daugherty's UFO with percussionist Evelyn Glennie. Mark has also performed with the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra, Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, Boulder Brass, Colorado Mahlerfest, Denver Municipal Band, and The Symphony of Oak Park & River Forest.

JOHN MARCHIANDO

Praised as a "first rate" soloist with a "crystal-clear sound," John Marchiando joined the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra as Associate Principal Trumpet in 2006 after previously holding positions with the Phoenix Symphony and the Arizona Opera.

Now performing in his third season as Principal Trumpet with the NMSO, Marchiando has performed as Guest Principal Trumpet with the Santa Fe Symphony and has also appeared with other notable ensembles such as the Santa Fe Opera, Summit Brass, Santa Fe New Music, the Toledo Symphony, the Michigan Chamber Brass and the Dodworth Saxhorn Band.

As a music educator, Marchiando currently serves on the faculty of the University of New Mexico and has held positions on the faculties of the University of Toledo and Arizona State University. He is also a member of the Trumpet Faculty of the prestigious Rafael Méndez Brass Institute, the summer home of the world-renown Summit Brass.

Active also as a soloist, John has performed as a recitalist and with orchestras and bands throughout the U.S., including appearances with the Summit Brass, Denver Municipal Band, New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and at the International Trumpet Guild Conference and the College Band Directors National Association Conference.

Marchiando can be heard on recordings on the Accord, Centaur, Summit and Stemming record labels and has also done projects for National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting System. As a music producer, John has completed several projects for Summit Records, including the two live performance recordings by the Summit Brass and the upcoming University of New Mexico Wind Symphony release.

John received degrees from the University of Michigan (B.M. '92, M.M. '95) and most recently completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Arizona State University (2004). His dissertation, The Rafael Méndez Online Library (http://mendezlibrary.asu.edu), is the official website of the Rafael Méndez Library housed at Arizona State.

Dr. Marchiando has been extremely fortunate to study with some of the greatest trumpet virtuosi in the world, including David Hickman, Armando Ghitalla, Charles Daval, Raymond Mase, Chris Gekker and Ramon Parcells.

In his free time, John enjoys playing golf, reading Sci-Fi novels, listening to his Rush records and watching baseball games. A baseball fanatic, John hopes each new season is the one where his beloved Milwaukee Brewers finally return to the playoffs.
