What is the proper pronunciation of "Sachse" as in Ernst Sachse and his 100 Studies? Thanks, Kyle

Actually, No , Blake , it is pronuonced Sox-uh.

Michael Sachs' (Cleveland Orchestra, former Houston Orchestra)
name is pronounced Sacks , at least that is how I have heard it pronounced when he played with the Houston Orchestra.

I am not familiar with the person, but knowing a thing or two about Germanic languages (in my case Dutch and German), the "CH" in Sachse is a sound that doesn't occur in the English language and is therefore most often substituted by "CK". It is the same CH as in "Bach" (whether the composer or the instrument maker).

I am not a linguist and so it is a bit difficult for me to explain how to make that sound in German (which is where the name probably comes from) or in where it has the same sound, but try this: set your tongue up to make the "K" sound (back of tongue against the top of your mouth), but in stead of releasing your tongue and therefore the air in one burst making the "K" sound, gently relax your tongue a bit and let the air flow smoothly. It should sound like air gently escaping from a pressurized container. Don't force things, your tongue should be relaxed and you shouldn't be pushing the air hard.

Regards, Christine
