I have the oppurtunity to play tpt on the show "Bye Bye Birdie" sometime not too soon. My question is, is the book any fun? I also have the option of playing bass instead, so if the trumpet book isn't any good, I'd rather do bass (which is easier) and make the same amount of money. Thoughts?

I did BBB with Fullerton Children's Reperatory Theater in '02 and had fun with it. If you get the DVD of the 1995 production starring Jason Alexander and Vanessa Williams (Amazon for $8, thoroughly entertaining and worth owning, IMO) you'll get a really good idea what you're getting into.

Played it this fall. The 1st trumpet book is a good deal of fun, if you like the schmaltzly dance-band kind of playing. You get to hang it out there a number of times. I had a riot doing it. The bass book (I sat right beside him) is cool, but I think the trumpet book is more exciting.

BBB is the first and only musical I ever had the opportunity of playing. I had a great time! At the time, I hardly ever got the chance to play jazzy type things, so it was a great learning experience for me. I'd go for it.

Do it. I wasn't in the pit, but rather onstage (playing Mrs. McAfee--high quality), and it was definitely the most fun show I've ever done. I wish I had the chance to play in the pit.

Ah, Doris McAfee, an excellent role. Second only to the great Harry McAfee!

The trumpet parts can be demanding. The 1st and 2nd parts often exchange roles. The 1st book can go up to high E's and F's. One tune that is strictly a dance number requires immence stamina (Shriner's Ballet) and extensive practice of harmonic minor scales. Definetly one of the most fun and classic musicals to do.

1966, in H. S.

My first show experience, still have fond memories of all the Dance numbers.

The conductor was an excellent show Bone player, helped me out a lot...

I played 2nd with Lawler Bb back in fall. Great musical, even the 2nd part gets some cool licks. Definitely one of the better books I've played. As he said, if you love the dance-bandy kind of music, you'll love the book.

You're looking at Birdie right here! We just started working on that show. Actually parts are cast, and readthrough on Tuesday. I am Conrad....

I'm playing 2nd trumpet on the show. Fun tunes, but they get repetitive. I'd suggest it just to get the show experience, if you haven't had that already.

Hope this helps,

I played lead in that show about 20 years ago. I wish I could help you, but I don't remember much about it. If I recall correctly, it was an animated and energetic score. There was a trumpet solo or two. I think "Put On A Happy Face" and "Kids" came from that show.

Played 2nd part in Junior year of HS....one my favorite memories honestly and not only because of the music...but mainly because the gorgeous dancers would stretch and warm up right behind us on stage...oh man.

But yeah, the music is pretty awesome. My favorite tune was "Alot of Livin' To Do". But it is actually quite a demanding show to play on the lead part. There are lots of Es and Fs and a few Gs too. But if you got he chops, it can be a really fun experience. The Herman orchestras rendition of "Alot of Livin" To Do" is one of my fav tunes; what with Chase roaring away on lead and stuff!

Ann Margaret..... I was only fourteen at the time and I still have visions of her "dance" at the end of the show. I am still in love with her.
