I've had a curious week or two, now. I got married this past Friday, went on a honeymoon, and am trying to get moved out of this place and in with my new bride.

Add to that the fact that I'm headed out for 6 weeks starting this coming Sunday, the 25th of May.

Man, I'm frazzled.

But I'm going to log on as often as I possibly can and will have to leave a couple projects on hold. I'll be getting back to those promptly upon my return on July 7th.

So . . . Dave, Chris, Bill, Paul, all you dyed-in-the-wool Reinhardt guys . . . please keep an eye on things for me during the times I can't be here, okay?

I'm looking forward to all the playing I'll be doing in the next 6 weeks, but I'm also looking forward to getting settled in my new home when I get back. Hopefully I'll be checking in frequently!

Rich

Ah... a "steady" gig. Good for you!!!! It's a shame you have to leave your bride so soon. It's nice that she knows who you are and what music means to you.....not to mention a paycheck! Have a great time. Hopefully you'll regail us with some road stories.

Oh, and we'll keep an eye on the shop while you're gone.

The "ball and chain" will probably reduce your time on the TH from now on. Who will step in and help fight the liberals in place of Rich?

Looks like things are in good hands here on the Dr. Donald S. Reinhardt forum.

I'm in Henderson, KY, today, proceeding down the Ohio River on the Delta Queen. The band is great: Walt Kross on clarinet and sax, Jeff Czech on bass, Tony Schwartz on piano, and Tom Kosparek on drums. I'm playing trumpet and cornet, and this gig works out many aspects of brass playing for me daily — endurance, range, soft playing, velocity, sustained playing, reading, improvising . . . too bad that the practice situation is somewhat limited.

Anyway, I just wanted to check in and say "Hey" from the road. Dave Sheetz, man, your website looks great! I can't wait to look through it more thoroughly.

Take care, everybody!

Rich

On June 6th I broke my left arm, tore some ligaments, jammed this and sprained that. I'm still playing (haven't missed a day) with one hand . . . left arm in a splint/sling. This is the hardest thing I've ever done.

The interesting thing has been noticing what's going on with my hand position(s) and how that's affecting my technique and ability to play in general. My range is as good as it's ever been, but my arms (and hands) are getting tired way before my chops.

Anybody had any experience trying to go on in the face of this kind of adversity?

Incidentally, I've been able to log on and read frequently, but posting is excruciatingly slow and cumbersome, so this might be all you hear from me for a week or so.

Also, my Olds Studio trumpet is turning out to be such a great horn for playing these shows, and my Olds Recording cornet is turning out to be a great horn for playing the dixieland sets. I'm sure glad that I'm "beyond" equipment considerations these days!

See y'all soon!

Rich

Rich:

Sorry to hear about your broken arm. Maybe one of the Shulman System devices from Bruce Lee would be JUST the item to assist in managing your horn while playing.

Best wishes and sincerely,

Congrats on your marriage and, remember, if Wingy Manone could make a name for himself with one arm, so can you!

I'm impressed, Rich. I broke my LEG once and I was off the horn for a MONTH! If you happen to float by a pretty little town called Madison, IN, tell them John says "hi." They'll know who you're talking about.

I hope you feel better quickly,
John

Rich,
In show biz it's "break-a-leg" not arm???
Little know scientific study (saw it on Johnny Carson) says
that brass horn sound vibrations help heal broken bones. Really!
Must have come from Doc. So just keep blowing away.
Get well quick Dude!

Rich;
Didn't you break your arm when you were at Oak Grove?
How about those Golden Knights?
Now in an attempt to get back on track.....................

Rich, there is always a silver lining to any tough situation, and in this one:
1. you'll get more tips from the sympathetic audience members.
2. you'll be able to get work as an atrists model, as kind of a living example of perspective (one arm will seem to be further away)
3. after this episode, everything else will seem easy!
I'm sure there are others I can't think of so be on the lookout for that unexpected silver lining.

Sorry to hear or your misfortune Rich. Get well soon. Takes guts to keep movin on. Keep up the good work.

A bone playin friend of mine lost his right (slide playing) thumb a few years back in his motorcycle. Horrible thing, got caught in the sproket and the doctors couldn't attach. Still plays t-bone amazingly well, a great jazz soloist too. He tends to play more euphonium and bass trumpet since the accident though. It's easier I suppose.

Thanks for the encouagement.

Today I finally had my appointment with the othopedist and he told me not to play trumpet for three weeks and started me on some physical therapy exercises. It seems that although I've not made things worse, I've been slowing down the healing by trying to play three and four hours a day, and he pronounced me "unfit for duty."
Coincidentally my wife arrived for our week-long cruise today and now we're both off the boat. Pretty much of a bummer there. We decided to take advantage of our time off and are having a continuation of our honeymoon . . . I'm glad she's such a great sport!
And, yes, Bill, I played with a broken arm back in junior high school but wasn't dealing with all the ligament and muscle damage that I incurred this time.
So at least they want me back for the next rotation starting July 20th. It really is a great job for a trumpet player and I'm grateful to have "passed the audition."
Rich

Hi Rich,

Sorry to hear about the broken arm. So you tuff-ed it out and finished your gig / engagement. Good for you. That must toughness must have come from that good ole Army training we had at Ft Stewart! (lol) Couldn't have been any worse then our pass in review gigs!

Heal up quick ole buddy and get back to the horn. 3 weeks that you can't play the horn??. **** man........ to you that must seem like a jail sentence!! It will go fast. Hang in there and enjoy the week/ extended honeymoon with the Mrs.
