Does anyone have any idea what mute I should be using for/in place of a 'Thin Mute'? This notation occurs in the musical "Sound of Music", and is in Edelweiss (Act II). Any serious ideas welcome!

Thanks!!

Straight. Something that will carry out of the pit if you are beneath the floor level. Other than that it's not something I'd sweat. Good luck.

Straight mute for sure. Some of the old markings are nicknames for what the mutes are actually called. I've seen tin's and stuff like that, even sweet soft mute in one line in Camelot. I think the 1st trumpet went with a harmon with the stem pulled out halfway. But I'm sure cup mute would have worked too probably.

Thanks for the replies. I had figured that it meant straight mute, but I thought I'd verify with "the powers that be" on TH. Perhaps I'll try my new glass straight mute. Hmmm...

Anyways, I guess that I'll probably wait until I've played in the performance space, then pick the specific mute brands to use. Thanks again to those who took time to reply. Much appreciated!
