The other day I was at the office and wanted to take a look inside one of my horns. I wandered over to a friends shop and borrowed his borescope. Over the course of an hour, I scoped around the inside of my 51 Committee Deluxe. I was amazed as to how many solider globs and stuff I saw inside. I am pretty anal about the cleanliness of my horns, but WOW the stuff I saw. Now I would like to find a way to remove the solider globs from the inside. That seems like it could be a task.

Monday Im going to scope my Lawler C7G LE SuperDeluxe and see what kind of stuff I see in there.

Any techs know how to remove the solider globs?

Yup, gross isn't it? Very common on just about every horn. Don't believe me? Scope your horn and find out.

For removal, I use a tool called Charlie Melk.

That is exactly what Flip does to all of his horns, and what is involved in the Total Enhancement. Definitely worth the money, if you're serious.

Jerry Callet started that years ago. He called it "Calletizing" your trumpet. Pretty fascinating concept to get the inside of the horn as smooth as the outside.

I've been wanting to borescope my Olds Super/Ultrasonic and my 1914 Buescher cornet. I saw how much a borescope costs. That ain't happenin any time soon.

This statement leaves a lot of room for misinterpretation.

I'm just saying.

When you get this excess solder removed, you will be shocked by the difference it makes.

Then you, like me, will run around the house screaming, "why don't they remove the excess internal solder in every horn before shipping it?!? I can't believe this!"

Then your family, cat, etc. will look at you funny. But you won't care.

trumpetheart,

If you live close to a public airport, contact a local aircraft repair facility. Aviation mechanics use borescopes on a regular basis.

Borescopes of different names seem to have been around a few years (more than 50). About 25 years ago I was told that one cost $18,000.00.
That was the one my gastroenterologist used for my colonoscopy. The full color photos of the inside of my colon were fantastic ... and gross!

Don't get mad at me ... because I'm saying that seeeing the inside of the finest horns we've heard about here on TH may also gross their owners out of ever playing them again. Well, the older the horn or the more it's played ... use your own descriptive adjective.

Be honest ... when was the last time many of you snaked your entire horn? When was the last time you truly gave it a soaking bath? OK, be truthful and tell me the statistics of the number of times you've brushed your teeth and rinsed your mouth after eating that cheeseburger or slice of pizza (or other food) before you play. Don't tell me you spit particles of them into your horn that will be in there until they rot, stink, and develop bacteria that a lot of scientists haven't yet seen.

Yeah, a competent toolsmith will tell you about a solder vacuum, especially if he/she has catered to the electronics industry, more specific printed circuitry. They are little more than tubular soldering tips with a vacuum inside the tube. What I haven't seen is any small enough to pass through our horns and burn and vacuum out all the debris including excess solder blindly. Maybe there is such ... in the mega-bucks price range ... such as surgeons now use.

But my thought is more toward is toward a solderless connection for horn parts, be it threads, precision swedging, or thermal fusion. I can even perceive finger sleeves and snap clips that would make disassembly for more intensive cleaning easier ... but such may only be on horn designs of the future, as then many will still cherish their vintage models. Are you ready for a floating bell on your trumpet or cornet? Yeah, one without brace tension, yet still supported!

I asked and we've seen X-ray of part of a horn. Yet, we've got to be able to analyse what we see in this image. First, to make it common procedure, the cost has to become lower. Still, such is on its way ... in the future.

Please, do the horn first.

My uncle, who has a near legendary sense of humor, went in to have a colonoscopy a couple years back. Just before they got started with the procedure, he asked the doctor "Hey, since you're gonna be in there anyway, would you mind clipping my gerbil's toenails?"

My uncle lives in Idaho, which is probably part of the reason the doctor didn't laugh at the joke.

Votaw tools have an inspection scope for about $175, not as high resolution as a $1500 model but quite adequate for horns. Mine arrived last week and am I having fun exploring the internals of my various horns.

Regards, Stuart

Most A/C tool supply dealers have hand held scopes ideal for this use. And not out of sight for cost.

You can get the ProVision 636 (the same 36" long, 0.23" diameter borescope model, sans the round ferrule at the end) plus the 90 deg. mirror attachment and spare light bulb at www.ToolRage.com (total cost $155 with free shipping in continental USA).
