I'm tempted to buy a Holton Al Hirt "Special" from a local guy around here. It's from the 70's and is in nice condition--but I know nothing about these. It's made in Elkhorn, has really nice valves, seems to be nice. Does anyone here have any experience with these? Could it be worth it to add to my collection?? Any info would be great!

I would pass on the Holton version of the Al Hirt horns. They were not that good. The Leblanc AL Hirt models were excellence horns. If you are going to get one get one of those horns.

I picked up one of the Holtons 2 years ago for $290.00. At that price it is a pretty good trumpet but not a professional effort by any means. The Leblanc built horns were very good.
As a collectible curiosity it is fun to have around so it was worth the bucks but I'm glad I didn't pay any morefor it........ |

There are some TH folks who are real enthusiasts about this horn.
I had one and it was a lightweight, responsive, blaster. It held the core downstairs as well. You could use it for Jazz, Big Band etc. It was a very comfortable horn to hold. Great valves to noodle on. I was told it was one of Holtons best at the time. Wonder how far off quality it was from the LeBlanc versions? $290 seems very reasonable. I think it's worth more..in decent shape.
However, sadly I found it hard to mix well with just about anything I tried it with. Both legit and non. Recording with it was a nightmare. Probably needed a valve alignment or something. |
