We've heard Lani and Herb twice in the last few years. Their show is really entertaining. Heb is a far better player than he gets credit for. The only thing I wish he would do is play without that soulo mute. 88 and still knocking out the 1 nighters.
Lani is worth the price of admission all by herself. Really fine voice and gorgeous as well. She looks 25-30 years younger than she is.
Their trio is first rate as well.

Thanks for that link, kehaulani. Soon as I find the time I will read it. Being a year younger than Herb, it interests me greatly to know that he is still playing the trumpet, and performing with Lani, his beautiful wife.
Probably due to jealousy ( he is a very rich, if not the richest player Stateside), I have always felt that his contemporaries underrated him as a player. But I for one never did.

Awesome, thanks. Going to be waiting in a doctor's office with a family member for a couple hours today -- this will be perfect to watch during that time.

If you live in LA or are visiting check out Herb’s Vibrato Grill. Pricey but worth it. https://www.vibratogrilljazz.com/ _________________ Jim Hatfield

mmmmmmm! My parents had that album. When they were out I'd get the album out just to look at it. _________________ Bach190ML43

As a player there's no doubt about having an agreeable sound. But he was smart to make the most out of what he had using a type of embellishment at the end of phrase in subtle, soft piercing vibrato, which had been a Harry James staple. Player, composer, arranger, and it didn't stop there.. album covers were well done showing a photogenic, physical appeal that put him in special category that few others could match in the 60's, except for rock stars or perhaps Steve McQueen.

I'm not really a big fan of Herb Alpert's early music, but I have immense respect for his musical instincts and as a producer. And a restless, artistic mind. Additionally, he is a great benefactor.
What won me over, mostly, was his humanity and care. Following one of Chet Baker's hiatuses from performing, he had a big come-back performance in L.A. Chet was so disorganized, he didn't even bring a horn to his own concert.
Herb, seeing Chet's dilemma, actually left the club, went home and got his own horn and brought it back for Chet to use. A lot of cats would've been disgusted with Chet and just left the club. But Herb showed his true caring for someone in need. He scored big points over that with me. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

I watched this the other night. It was very inspiring.
I've come full circle with Herb Alpert. When I was a kid the TJB was the big thing, and my brother and I and a bunch of kids in our neighborhood all took up the trumpet because of Herb.
Later on as I was trying to make trumpet my life's work, the popularly accepted doctrine among trumpeters in my circle was that HA had no chops and we should be listening to the heavies to learn how to play the trumpet.
A few years ago, while working on a writing project, I needed some background music that wouldn't distract me from what I was doing--and I downloaded some TJB and some of his later stuff. I suddenly found myself appreciating just how musical Herb Alpert is, even with those "corny little ditties" from the '60s. His sound is unique and though he's no Doc or Freddie, what he does is joyful and he has earned the right to be regarded as an influential trumpeter. _________________ Bryan Fields

Interesting, the comments of other, non-musicians I watched / listened with.
It's nice music with which Herbie has entertained us.

Seeing Herb's music as substantial vs. popular are not mutually exclusive. Being accessible requires a quality all of its own. But that kind of quality often is not the same kind of artistic content. As an aside, I do not like stereotyping people and addressing them demeaningly just because they don't agree with me. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Trying not to be a snob toward abstract art and sculpture filling museums these days, with spirit totems as a form of that...whereas stone carving seems to be dying out today.

Apparently, you do not share my sentiments, regarding "jazz snobs / cork sniffers".
So be it.
You may recall (I have no idea of your age) during the 1980s, the controversy over Kenneth Gorlick ("Kenny G"), and his successes.
A cabal of "jazz elitists" dismissed Gorlick as a talentlessness hack.
In today's vernacular, we would call them, "cancel culture" .. "cork sniffers" .. etc.
Gorlick had (still has) the last laugh ($$$). I believe Mr. Alpert had world-wide success and a prosperous career, also.
He played an old Chicago Benge, with a few dents and patches (Heaven forbid!).
I can ignore anyone. _________________ Sub-Optimal Hillbilly Jazz
