|

I'd like to see us produce a chronology of Maynard's lead players.
Here's all I can provide by memory. Take it and add what you know for sure:
1974 Stan Mark
1986 Wayne Bergeron
1988 Roger Ingram?
1995 Scott Englebright _________________ "Johnny, that must be a terrible thing to live with day after day!"
"What do you mean, Mr. B?"
"I mean, to have all that music in you, and not be able to get any of it out!" |

Currently - Pat Hession (not sure when he actually started)
Right before Pat was Mike Bogart ('98-'00 ??) |

Chet Ferretti in the 60s. Bill Chase in the late 50s. Lynn Nicholson split lead with Stan in the 70s. Hoby Freeman followed Stan, 83- 84-ish. Alan Wise played some lead in the 80s, too. Louis Fasman in 84-85. Mike Bogart at some point in the 90s. Adolfo Acosta in 99-2000, left to join TOP and was replaced by Hession in 6/2000. Steve Reid briefly in the fall of '97 (replaced Engelbright for awhile) Joey Tartell 94-95-ish. Engelbright '95-98-ish (off the band in fall '97, back in summer '98). Bergeron played lead from 1/86 until MF cut the horn section a few months later, then came back in '88 or so. Ingram/Bergeron in 88. I think there was a mystery guy between Fasman and Bergeron who maybe didn't last long in late '85. |

Nicholson never played "lead"
Bogart played the jazz chair
Going backwards, here is what I came up with.....
Hession
Acosta
Reid
McDonald
Engelbright
John Chudoba
Jason Carder
Brian McDonald
Joey Tartell
Frank Greene
Jon Owens
Craig Johnson
Ingram
Bergeron
Wise
Fasman
Freeman
Mark
Biviano
Alan Downey
Derek Watkins
(CBC album and Gustav Brom album with other bands)
Nat Pavone
Clyde Reasinger
Bill Chase
Chet Ferretti
Buddy Childers
then it gets tough to tell who was playing lead

This reminds me of a crack I made to a buddy a few weeks ago actually. Originally, she played trumpet, but she's been trying to learn bass. I listened to her playing one afternoon on the thing, and as a compliment/joke said, "Wow, soon enough you'll be playing bass for Metallica...or lead book for Maynard. I mean, everyone's basically done both."
At least I thought it was funny. _________________ Chris King

Funny how small the world is. My brother in law was asked my Metallica to fill in when they were looking for a bass player. He refused, and I don't know why other than he's married. _________________ Trumpet: Bach 180LR, 72 bell

Nicholson never played "lead"
My understanding is that he split lead with Stan Mark in order to cover the higher passages, back before Stan got his upper register together. |

I'm willing to bet anything that Lynn Nicholson split the lead on the Chameleon Session.
Not all his lead players got to record!! Here's a couple more:
Walter White; Eric Miyashiro; Paul Stevens.
Did Don Rader, Rick Kiefer or Nat Pavone play lead for MF? |

if you add split lead guys, the list grows rapidly....
Walter White never played lead, Eric never played with MF, and I did forget Paul Stephens, I also forgot Dan Miller who was right before Paul.

John Donnelly was his lead player in 1970 or 71 or both.

I saw Nicholson play lead with MF during the Wichita Jazz Festival back in 1973 or 1974 (can't remember for sure which.....I think the latter). I have no idea if he was a regular lead player or not, but he did a great job that night. |

Quote from highnote:
"Walter White never played lead, Eric never played with MF, and I did forget Paul Stephens"......end of qoute.
Okay, but that's not what I got from Eric.... And it's hard for me to believe that a guy with CHOPS like Walter White didn't play some lead in the band. Like I stated, they all didn't get the chance to record. What's the story on:
ANDREA TOFANELLI
DANNY BARBER
CHUCK ARNOLD. He's the guy that Bogy brought in to replace him.
ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN BUY A USED LAWLER TRUMPET?!! |

According to a recent post by Eric on the MF forum, he sat in with MF's band a half dozen times, but was never a full-time member. |

Andrea Tofanelli was a guest performer with Maynard. However, he was never a full time member. That said, he's still young enough that he could be Maynard's next lead player if Hession decides to pack it up and leave. Let's not think that far ahead though. _________________ Trumpet: Bach 180LR, 72 bell

Patrick isn't packing it in any time soon. He just got some assistance. Ken Robinson is going on the next tour to play 2nd and split some lead. |
