I've been having some issues with Hetman's oil in my Schilke. I've tried all the weights, from light to classic, and they haven't delivered satisfactory results. My question is: What do you guys use in your Schilkes? Anyone ever had this problem? I cleaned out the casings and valves, and re-set the horn with Blue Juice, to see if it will work. _________________ Bb- Stomvi Mambo

I have a B5 trumpet and an Eb cornet. I use Al Cass, never had a problem with either one. _________________ Besson Sovereign 924R Eb Cornet - Stork 3SC

I use Hetman No. 2 on all my Schike's with no problems or complaints. I have the ML valve body (used for the B1 and B5) and the M valve body (used for the B6 and B7) which I use with #1 and #2 taper tunable bells. I had an X4 I recently sold and it was also fine with Hetman.
There is no inherent incompatability with Hetman valve oil and Schilke trumpets. If you're having difficulties my first suspicion would be that there is some mechanical reason. I suggest that you call Schilke to discuss the matter. If you don't make any headway there, I suggest that you call Hetman. _________________ HERMOKIWI |

I have used Hetman on all types of trumpets and cornets without any problems related to the oil. As long as any trace of petroleum based oil or incompatible lubricants was removed from the valves before using the Hetmans, I would be very surprised if the lubricant is the problem. _________________ Conn 6B

I'm glad you clarified that! I thought it was a trick question, like "Do you want to get on the airplane now?" _________________ Crazy Nate - Fine Yet Mellow Fellow

You never described the problem you were having. Is the piston hanging up? Is it sticking? Up or down stroke? How old is the horn? When was it last serviced? Have you mixed two different kinds of oils?
If there is one thing that is true about Schilke horns, it's that they are built right. If you have thoroughly cleaned the casings and the pistons and they are still sticking, you should take your Trumpet to a tech to check it out.
In my opinion, T2 is a pretty good oil but anything should work in a Schilke. |

For what it's worth, I noticed that heavier weight oils, such as Five Star (purchased from Dr. Valve) or Ultra Pure, don't work as well in tighter tolerance horns such as the Schilkes. I have been using Blue Juice, which I consider fairly light viscosity in the Schilkes with good results. _________________ 2006 Holton ST308 MF Horn

La Tromba oil.
I used Al Cass before that, but La Tromba is better. Absolutely no sticking valves, and doesn't wash out easily during playing. |

Al Cass. It's what Ren recommended when I bought my first horn from him in 1969 and it works well in all of them for me. Back then it came in glass bottles with an "eye dropper" to apply, and Schilke also carried it in an aerosol can that he advocated spraying into the mpc receiver, then blowing hard while working the pistons and not taking them out except on very occasional occasions to clean. There was also a green colored offering from Getzen many moons ago that worked well, too. Otherwise, I've tried Blue Juice (great if you want to add more every 4 hours), Allisyn, several Hetman varieties and even some Bach and Holton stuff that was lying around the building when I needed a quick fix but none of them worked better than the Cass as far as I could tell. With all lubes, it's probably just as important that one keeps things clean and wet as it is the type of oil. There are also some people who's personal system of excess, uh, juices do not mix well with certain lubes. (Or it just could be the cheap booze and coffee they drink. ) |

I'm surprised none of you use the Schilke oil. That was one of the dozen I tried (a report will follow one of these days) but it didn't work as well for me as my other oils.

I use Ultrapure on my 2005 B1 and the valves work great.
I usually clean and oil the valves thoroughly every week or two but this summer I didn't and at the end of the Summer the valves were still working well.
I used Al Cass previously. It was good but the Ultrapure is excellent and lasts longer. When I switched to Ultrapure I did wash out the Schilke thoroughly first. _________________ Michael Greenberg

I also use the la Tromba T2 on everything with valves. I've tried several others but like the T2 the best (so far....) However, I used the hetmans with very good success on all my Schilkes prior to my switch. My old teacher always suggested using the Alisyn spray solvent as a lubricant if they're hangin up on ya every once in a while to release any buildup. Then wipe em down after a few days and start back with your oil again. Anytime my valves have hung or started working slowly, I do this and it works every time.
good luck!
