That is EXACTLY why I do it. The sooner one can play "in the natural way" (as my mentor Leon Petre would say) the easier it is and the more a student can concentrate on the joy of making music.
Oh, and it is Ms. Yates
PS When I hold consultations, I allow players to bring any other mouthpieces, be them GR or not, to throw into the mix. It is a very objective process that gleans a lot for each player. _________________ BACH Trumpet Artist-Clinician

LOL. I know of what you speak, Mike. LOL. During the playing evaluation, there is a ff/pp excerpt which should have exposed that aspect and therefore, the player made aware that it was unacceptable to their ears (that is why it is one of the pieces consultants use to determine the desired outcome). Many times substituting a symphonic blank for a standard blank will fix that - especially on C trumpet. Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss your options or have anything you want to ask. We are neighbors now, so it wouldn't hurt |
Just do it, Mike...it certainly won't hurt to check them out again. I experienced the same thing the first time I was able to try GR mouthpieces, but they have a number of newer options out there that might really surprise you.
FWIW, I have a pretty compact sound that lights up pretty quickly. I don't have those issues on my 66.8C (which is a newer model, and yes, I have the symphonic blank). Conversely, my old 1.5C can flat out sound obnoxious when I push it.

I have tried a lot of mouthpieces and I seem to play best on rather large pieces, with an ID of about 17.5 to 18mm. I used a GR 65FL in my flugel for a while, but I find a Stork Vacchiano 1.5FL works a lot better. On trumpet I'm now playing on a Weril 1 and a Roditi 1B. I've tried going back to a 3C Bach and other smaller pieces, but I just don't play as well either high or low as with these larger pieces. I see by the GR website that there really isn't anything bigger than a 17.3mm ID. I guess there isn't a GR in my future . . . . _________________ royjohn

Education has been paramount in the GR Business Plan since the inception of the company. GR has been visiting colleges and universities for years, when he has time! He has conducted clinics and master classes at a number of trumpet and brass conventions. Recently GR has even taken on an engineering student apprentice! Our consultants are always encouraged to do the same and Alex has stepped up and taken her GR Consulting knowledge on the road!
We are thrilled that Alex is on the road visiting schools and conducting consultations in the U.S. and Europe. She continues to do a great job at these venues. Check Alex Yates' website for details. http://www.alexyates.com/about/gr/
Alex can also be contacted through this forum!
Upcoming GR Events:
Gary Radtke will be conducting master classes and consultations this October at Boston University with Terry Everson, New England Conservatory with Ben Wright, and Boston Conservatory with GR Consultant Steve Emery.
Contact Steve Emery for details: stevedeb@beld.net
Brian Scriver will be at Mohawk College in Ontario Canada Nov. 3.
Contact Jason Logue for details: jasonlogue@mac.com
Feel free to contact our team of consultants with any questions regarding a consultation in your area.

The best way to reach Alex is by email at ayates@alexyates.com.
Alex is currently having her website rebuilt, so the link Brian provided above contains only old news. Gary Radtke has promised that Alex's upcoming schedule will be on the GR website within the next 48 hours. I know that her itinerary is already in Brian's email box.
Alex has been on the road almost constantly and following the old link that Brian provided will show you the breadth of her activity at colleges and conferences over the last several months.
I know that for much of the rest of October and the beginning of November she will be in Europe. She is performing the Hummel at the 75th International Tchaikovsky Festival in the Ukraine. The rest of that trip includes work related stops in London (see a related thread in this forum), Belgium, Netherlands & Germany.
I know that she is already scheduled to visit numerous schools in Ohio, Alabama and Kentucky in November and February. She and I are currently planning our spring and summer intinerary and are looking to fill tour dates across the US and in Europe (and hopefully Asia). We are available for performances together or with our sextet, the Jazz Trumpet Project (also with trumpeter Paul Tynan), and for clinics, workshops, adjudication and educational presentations with our 21st Century Trumpet program. Wherever we go she will have her mouthpiece kit in tow and mouthpiece consultation appointments can be arranged. _________________ Bach trumpet artist-clinician

I'm not sure. I do know that she has a different mouthpiece to match her to each of her horns. _________________ Bach trumpet artist-clinician

Bb 65/3MX* Gold
C 65/3C 2.4 Gold
Eb 65/3C* Silver
Piccolo 63PM #41 adapter Silver
Cornet 65/3 Gold
Flugel 65FL Gold
* I like the grip of silver for higher horns, but am primarily a gold player. All of my instruments are made by Eclipse except for my Eb and rotary. Schilke E3L is the Eb and the rotary a Monke. _________________ BACH Trumpet Artist-Clinician

65/3MX*
65/3C 2.4
65/3C*
I don't see any of those models on the GR website.
1) What are they?
2) Does GR sell any other models that aren't listed on the website?
a) If so, what are they?
b) If so, are they going to be listed on the website eventually? |

Wayne is having his own made now..... |
I think he's got it, the high point on the rim was out too far...I played it, nice piece. |
Woooo hooooo! See....that is why it is good to be "fitted". What is right for Carl is not exactly right for Wayne. Close is not good enough. |
I can't wait to see how Wayne's mpc turns out. I know he was using a Marcinkiewicz 1.5 before, I wonder how close this one is? I play something similar but smaller so I'm wondering how this one will play?... |

ALL of your questions can be answered with a consultation. A consultant knows the numbers and the line and the recipe for each player once they go through the consultation process. My mouthpieces are custom pieces made to work with my face and my UK instruments. Not every single combination is listed on the site (or maybe it is if you look long enough LOL) The 3MX, 3C* and 65C* are all listed and every component is listed. I basically like the "3 series" and played on them for over a year. I then had them fitted to the smaller diameter rim - 65. I played a 1C my entire life and was primarily an orchestral player until five years ago. Now that I am doing much more solo work - long distance running as opposed to sprinting (solo work vs. orchestral work) I downsized my rim diameter a smidgen while keeping things in balance. In a large nutshell, there are endless possibilities and the consultants know the line. If anything you don't see listed is right for your instrument and face, it can be made. The key word for my pieces is "custom". They cost more because they were not part of the main line and were custom made for me and my instruments. Gary has always made custom mouthpieces, but because his options have grown over the years, custom pieces are less and less necessary. His line is always growing. Some of my pieces are now part of his line as they were made three years ago.
I hope this helps answer your questions. _________________ BACH Trumpet Artist-Clinician

There are only 12 certified GR consultants. All of them live in North America and none of them live in California. The two nearest consultants to you are both over 1000 miles away (in Dallas or Portland). Maybe you will be fortunate enough to find that Alex's travels take her to Southern California. If not, you will probably have to travel to a consultant.
According to the GR website there is a GR dealer in San Diego, though. However, most dealers do not have consultants on staff. _________________ Bach trumpet artist-clinician
