I'm a big fan of Charles Daval's playing on the following Montreal recordings:

Janacek Sinfonietta/Glagolitic Mass
Tchaikovsky Nutcracker
Ibert Escales, Flute Concerto, etc.

I was wondering, aside from a Shostakovich CD are there any other recordings that have him playing principal?

Also does anyone know what equipment he was using in those days? I know its the man behind the horn but I'm curious just the same.

Thanks,

Adam

Charlie is a VERY special player! In addition to the recordings you listed here are a couple more he played on:

Shosty 1 & 15 Montreal-Dutoit
Sing, Sing, Sing Boston Pops - Williams
Holst Planets Boston Pops - Williams (not positive on this, but it was recoded when he was principal in the Pops. Never asked him, though)
Mahler 2 with BSO (played 1st offstage and 3rd onstage)
Recordings with Boston Pops and Williams.

Also, He recorded the Hindemith Trumpet and Alto-Horn Sonatas. Those are available on iTunes.

Equiptment: In the orchestra most was Bach C trumpet 229-25H. Bach 1C rim with 1B underpart. Varying throat and backbore combos. Kept the same rim for most stuff, even piccolo, but changed the underpart as he needed to.

Other horns I remember:
Bach 184 Cornet with trumpet receiver
Bach 37 Bb
Bach C trumpet cut down to an Eb
Selmer piccolo and G trumpet
Yamaha Flugelhorn.

Pretty straight ahead.

Thanks for posting the info on Mr. Daval.

Who was playing principal on the Montreal Kodaly CD? That's a favorite of mine.

Thanks!

Thanks for the info!

I do have most of those Pops recordings as well. Also the Hindemith. His recording of the Alto Horn sonata is the best I've heard. I wonder if anyone knows what kind of set up he used for that?

John,

I believe the Kodaly recording was done more recently during Paul Merkelo's tenure, not positive though.

My Kodaly CD lists a recording date of 1994, and Mr. Merkelo's website says he started in Montreal in 1995. What years did Mr. Daval play there?

I've got a GREAT recording of Strauss' Der Buerger als Edelmann with Montreal with Mr. Daval.
Great trumpet playing.

Perhaps he's also playing on the Miraculous Mandarin CD? That CD was recorded the same months as Janacek (May and October 1991).

Russ De Vuyst played principal on the Kodaly recording. I know because I played 3rd tpt.

Susan - Congrats! That's a great recording! Trumpets sound spectacular!

Were there any other recordings made in your time there?

"My time" was just 1 season, 93-94. I also remember recording Berlioz Les Troyens and Shostakovich 5.
