Hey everyone,
I have plenty of information on Joseph Gustat, former principal of the St,. Louis Symphony and a leading teacher during the 1920s, '30's and '40s, but I have not been able to find a photo of him. Can anyone point me to a photo of him, or send me one by email? I would really appreciate it.
Thanks!

Dave,
I don’t have any pictures for Joseph Gustat, but I did do quite a bit of research for the Saint Louis Symphony when I was putting the list together of the players in the section. I know that he was born about 1888 in Illinois and his parents were both from Italy. His Wife’s name was Margaret, and in 1910 they were living in Denver and he was shown as a musician in the theater industry (prior to his position with the Saint Louis Symphony).
The email contacts that I had were back in 2004 and 2005, but some of these people may still be at the same address and be able to help. I hope one of these sources will have a picture!
I’ll send out requests for a picture and copy you on the email messages. _________________ Derek Reaban

Did you get one? There is a photo of him in the liner notes to Schlueter's CD, From The Heart. _________________ Peter Kenagy

Yes, Hickman got a photo.
The Gustat photo can be seen on page 322 in "Trumpet Greats".
Btw, anyone know when and where he was born and when and where he died?
Gustat, Joseph ("Joe") (b. c1887; d. date unknown)

Oh I should check that out.
I think he died in Orlando in November 14, 1951. There is a newspaper clipping online that I haven't viewed, but looked at the OCR text.

Best wishes,

Dear Mr. Hickman,
If you have ability to look in the Orlando Sentinel newspaper that I linked, perhaps it will clear things up. I don't know how to access without signing up for a membership.
It says, "MR. JOSEPH GUSTAT Mr. Joseph Gustat, 53, one time first trumpet player for the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, died at his Orlando home yesterday after an illness of several months. Mr. Gustat, who resided at 1500 Ridgewood Ave. for the last four years, moved here after retiring in St. Louis following 27 years with the symphony orchestra. A Roman Catholic, he was nationally known as a teacher of trumpet. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret Gustat of Orlando; one brother, P. J. Gustat, Sebring; one sister."

So, if the article was published Nov 14, 1951 and says he died the previous day, then his death was Nov 13, 1951.
Best wishes,
Peter
