RSVPS are PMing in for the Hang. Here's an updated list of the horns we're expecting to have to try.

Wild Thing Bb tpts
Bach C (with a Dr. Valve leadpipe)
Selmer piccolo tpt
Conn Connstellation tpts
Holton MF Horn tpts
Eclipse Bb cornet (with red brass bell)
Getzen Severinsen
Schilke B6/C7L
Holton 48 tpt
LA Olds Super tpt
LA Olds Ambassador tpt
Bach Strad 37 Bb tpt
1951 King Super 20
Buescher 400 trumpets and cornet
Bach 37 Bb tpt
Bach 72R Bb tpt (with Nurenberg step leadpipe fabricated by Brian Rogers whom I'm inviting to attend with some of his pipes)
Paris LeBlanc LB Bb tpt
Paris LeBlanc flugel (formerly owned by Buddy Childers)
Yamaha Mk II C tpt (with Dick Akwright mod to allow interchangeable pipes)
Benge picc (with Blackburn A pipe)
Holton Llewellyn Bb
Getzen LB 800S Bb cornet
Conn Victor 80A Bb cornet
1947 French Besson Meha Bb tpt (previously owned and played by Johnny Zell, trumpet soloist for the Lawrence Welk show)
Boston 3 Star BbCornet
Rotary trumpets in Bb and C
Burbank Benge Large Bore Bb tpt
CG Bb trumpets
Lawler Bb tpt (large step bore, 1A leadpipe, big red brass bell)
Yamaha C tpt (with a Bach 43R pipe and M/K Drawing tuning slide)

Obviously, geography will limit attendance. Tom and I encourage those of you who live elsewhere in the world to think about organizing your own hang. All it takes is a space large enough to hold a few dozen brassaholics and a spouse willing to put up with it - or head out of town for the weekend!

Bring your mutes and any books you think people might like to see as well. I know a lot of you haven't played some of the newer H&B mutes, for example, so I'll be bringing those.

I'll add my early '90's Bach 229/25H C trumpet to the foray and a Yamaha Eb Cornet if anybody's interested in trying it. I'm hoping someone shows up with a Bach Chicago C trumpet!!! I want to compare one to my Bach C trumpet.

I'll also bring my Amrein Trompeten Dämpfer (Straight Mute) from Germany. These are the best straight mutes in the world in my opinion. We used them exclusively for Disney's "Der Glöckner von Notre Dame" and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin also uses them (or did back when I was subbing there). They have a beautiful tone and play more in tune than any other straight mute I've ever tried. I think we should all have one!

Here's a picture:

And Scott, you WILL be there - no excuses!!! I haven't played in the same place with you since Westview Junior High School, circa 1974...

Can't wait!

Best wishes,

John

I can bring some interesting stuff (almost 100-year-old Boston 3 Star Cornet, Rotary trumpets in Bb and C, Eb trumpet, Eb Cornet, Pic, Flügelhorn, Burbank Benge Large Bore, CG trumpets, etc.).

John Mohan

How you gonna carry all that?

The one in front (without the roof carrier). The one in back's too small for that many horns. Besides, the Z doesn't do winters.

Do you mean the Jeep, or the mouthpiece case on top? (No wussy little mouthpieces allowed around here).

Funny! I was thinking about putting a post in saying basically the same thing.

Jim:

I was thinking about coming, but I see that Calicchioman Scott is now going, so I cannot come now. Everytime I play one of his horns, I want to buy it so that would be like putting an alcoholic in a bar with no soda available....

Anyway - schedule permitting, I will be there with a few horns in tow.

Man, I would love to attend but will be landing in Sao Paulo about that time. Damn work always gets in the way! And my NY Bach will not be back from Charlie Melk until February.

Just curious if you keep any kind of notes/comments from the guys on playing the different horns? It would kind of interesting to keep a record of everyone's thoughts on how they played, the sound, etc. Could be the start of a nice database of information.

You have a lot of great horns...have a great time!

Happy New Year to all!

Sao Paulo - you location dropper, you!

No, we've never gathered comments from the Hang in any formal way, although a few details creep into the police reports from time to time. (In 2009, the officer investigating the noise complaint said he like the Wild Thing a lot.)

Seriously, collecting comments is a good idea. Co-host Tom and I will toss that around and see if maybe we can come up with an evaluation form of some sort.

At the very least I can keep my ears open and post a summary of which horns seemed to be getting the raves.

Feliz ano novo!

You have no idea how much I would love to be there. I want to meet all you guys!

Unfortunately, I have to go back to school tomorrow, not to leave (other than for college auditions) until March.

Small update, we have about two dozen RSVPs and upwards of 50 horns joining the party. Jim also informs me that multiple TVs will be showing the Packers beating the Bears (sorry, you know I had to).

We also want to encourage you to bring anything you want to trade or sell, mouthpieces or mutes or even horns. Obviously any deals you make are your own and neither Jim nor I are liable for anything not working out. Write up what you want to get rid of and leave your flyer in a stack by the beer that people can leaf through at their leisure.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Tom
