GREAT! First time we'll see each other since that big band thing at Fitzgeralds a couple years ago (and only the 2nd time since college days somewhere around a third of a century ago). Ouch - I just aged myself.

ohhhhhh man. I want to be there as well. I sold quite many of my horns but could bring Bavarian beer, a brandnew B&S Challenger and a bag full of DHCs. If someone drives over Bavaria he or she can take me to the party.
Otherwise enjoy the party, the instruments and write a looooooong essay about the hang!!!!! _________________ Think music! |

Hey, if anyone coming on Sunday has a Warburton 3M and/or a Curry 3ZM (usually stamped just "3M" on the actual mouthpiece) and/or a Curry 3BC (I'm referring to the older, pre 2005 Curry models without the "." after the model name), I'd sure appreciate it if you'd bring them to the party on Sunday!
Thanks,
John Mohan |

Hello;
Looking forward to tomorrow's event. Should be bringing my '50 NY Bach Mercedes, '56 Conn Connstellation, '48 LA Olds Super, and maybe another one or two... If anyone has a Holton ST307 that they could bring, I would love to playtest it. Thanks again, and see everyone tomorrow! _________________ 2006 Holton ST308 MF Horn

I'm looking at the RSVPs and the list of horns. We're going to need more Hearos. _________________ Jim Hatfield

Wow, Jim. I went by your house early this morning and was surprised to see your front yard festooned with brightly-colored VW micro-buses. Did you serve breakfast also?
See you in a few.

I haven't heard a single siren all afternoon. I probably should swing past Jim's house and help him roll up the caution tape before his wife gets home. . .
Hopefully, y'all had a good time. I am certain 30 trumpets all playing "Bear Down, Chicago Bears" was something to behold. . .

What a day! The Bears win big and 30+ trumpet players had a blast trying 70+ horns and downing an unknown number of beverages. High Note honors ended in a tie between Fred Cantu and Nick Drozdoff. They topped out at Double X.
In the Total Horns category, John Mohan brought 11 and Steve "Dr. Valve" Wynans brought 9. The Farthest Distance Traveled award went to Charles Roberts of Gainesville, Florida, who was in Chicago for a lesson with the CSO's Tage Larsen. Best Salsa went to co-host Tom Krueger (VetPsychWars).
Some wine glasses were shattered and some paint was peeled but no animals were harmed and the cops didn't come. What more can you ask?
Photos to come after I sort out the X-rated ones. _________________ Jim Hatfield

I now officially want a Boston Ne Plus Ultra (3 star), a Monke rotary C and possibly an E3L-4...I blame John Mohan!
Another note on nice horns; when Tom Krueger (VetPsychWars) talks about those Buescher horns he is not kidding! They play really well!
To whoever had the basket full of mouthpieces on the bar/ledge, I tried a cornet mouthpiece I wanted to ask about possibly buying or trading for, a Bach "Corp." 1C. Please send me a PM since I would like that mouthpiece if it is available, it works great on my C cornet. _________________ Charles Russell Roberts

What a collection of horns and characters today. Nice to see many familiar and some I have never met. he kid from Floridada (I grew up there and Cali I can call it what I want) can play!
Steve (AKA Dr. Valve) had a usual assortment of unique stuff to try and all of it HIGH QUALITY!!! Beautiful work Steve.
I actually got to try a few horns I have long wanted to try and one unexpected horn that I never thought I get a shot at (probably never will again, BOOOOO!!).
The Kanstul Built Besson Meha was really nice, personally like the regular one not the Najoom leadpiped one, but could easily see why someone would pick the other without reservation. In fact would not care either way long term just back to back the original one was really nice to the sound in my head.
The CG Selmer that John Mohan brought was really neat to play again. The last one I played was no where near as bright and did not ring like this one. But for some reason everything changed on this horn for me. Felt like everything in the middle register was in the wrong place all the sudden. Then CG Benge was that familiar sound from a long missed friend. I just get the sound of my old Jupiter built Centurion I got in back in High School just played nicer. I really liked this horn. Then John's 1947 Besson Meha previously owned by one of CG lead players and it was that old Benge thing all over again. For some reason a bit stuffy down low. John thought possibly valve alignment might be off. Definitely had potential.
OK I got to this horn very early but here is John's horn that blew my mind. A Burbank 6X with a CG ordered .464" bell choke. What a horn. For my main horn for where I play my Chicago is still my goto horn but if there is horn calling my heart strings this is it. Wow, oh, WOW!!! Take a Bach then goto my Kanstul Chicago 1001. Now ask yourself what the next step would be.... Yup a Burbank 6X with .464" chocked bell. Amazing. Just sings and sings then does it again to make sure you heard it.
His Boston 3 Star just proves we have one NO WHERE in cornet design in 100 years. That is seriously nice.
Mike brought his Wild Thing again and this time with the braceless #1 slide and it was much much better. Very nice. I liked it a lot. Not ready to quite go that way yet but it was much more the horn I thought it woulod be this time. I remember reading after last Hang he pulled this tuning slide out and I don't think he has looked back yet. So Shofarguy I think I now understand why you like it but not sure it is where I would want to go.But would not turn one down.
From there a whole litany of Bach, Calet, Olds, Buescher, Yamaha, lots of Schilkes, Martins, etc etc etc..... Even had Rotaries to play with today too.
What a fun day. Got to have the Double C and up notes installed on my Kanstul so I know they are there LOL!!!
That Jim and Tom for hosting and what a wonderful event. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be back to the next one next year. Too much fun.

Thank you all for coming and I'm glad everyone had fun. That's what Jim and I were going for, and it worked out again this year as it did last year.
Thanks especially to all who played my horns and made them sound better than I do!
I encouraged some of you to play the Humes and Berg mutes and I look forward to your reviews. I think those mutes are seriously undervalued and I want people to know they exist before spending more money on other mutes.
I really liked John Mohan's Selmer CG and I was happy to have played John and Steve's respective Martin Committee trumpets. Now I know. Sorry, kids, I don't think it's special and my red Aristocrat sounds somewhat like that. Feel free to disagree.
Those of you who came by, thanks. We do this for you. If you missed it this year... we'll see you next year!
