I've been using a Schilke 6A4a with my Yamaha 6810S piccolo trumpet. I had been using the Schilke 11AX. I like the sound with the 11AX but I like the response with the 6A4a. Guess I'll keep experimenting. What differences do you see with the Yamaha version? _________________ "Mary, is the twelfth George Washington's birthday or is it mine?"

For a while there in the early 80's Yamaha and Schilke were in bed together. I had a Yamaha 739T (gorgeous .462 that played like a dream)that was a copy of the X3 (if memory serves me right). Anyway, I digress . . . that horn had a Yamaha 13A4a which felt in every way the same as my Schilke 13A4a even though the outside more closely resembled a Bach than a Schilke.
Hope this helps as I am a bit outside where I normally wander these days as you can see from my signature! _________________

General consensus, in my experience, is that Yamaha pieces tend to run smaller than the corresponding Schlike, by about one size. _________________ Bach, Schilke, Pickett mostly |

yep,the yamaha is slightly smaller in cup diameter and depth.
The rim is less comfortable than the Shilke, but i,m getting used to it.It has more bite on the rim and less alpha angle on the inside.Reminds me of an old bach i played in college in the 70;s.
I get better attack with the Yamaha but less projection at the moment.
I,m waiting for a new Holton ST308 ,so i will have more observations soon_i,m using a Conn22B at the mo.
Trying to use Walt Johnson,s book etc ,i have noticed that the Yamaha wants to go beyond G above Top C on the high gear setting,i just can,t find my sweet spot yet.
Overall,i,m pleased with the Yamaha.I do have very thin lips so it works well for me.I just want to feel how it plays on a ML bore, and on a brand new horn, with no mechanical problems(the 22B needs a valve replating done)

It seems Yamaha is a fickle mistress . . . in the 70's, before Schilke it was CONN for a while! _________________

It's seemed to me that Yamaha pieces are similar to the Schilke ones they are numbered like (those of you who say they are slightly smaller might be right, I haven't played them enough lately) but have a more Bach-ish rim than the standard Schilke rim which is flatter - to me. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

well,i gave it a good 3 weeks, but its too small in diameter for me,the rim was not comfortable enough, and i lost my tone /sound.
Apart from that it is the nearest mpc i,ve tried(bought)to my Shilke6A4a.
Anyone want to suggest another possible mpc that i could try ,see if things improved?Maybe a Curry?? |

In my limited experience no other piece feels like the Schilke and I've played (long ago) from size 6A4a through 14B. If you're fond of that rim a good option might be to have a rim cut and threaded and try it on other underparts. I've known many players who wound up doing this with Reeves underparts (http://www.bobreeves.com/) with good results. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."
