Hi People

I've sourced info from many sources and am publishing this list.

COMPLETE Yamaha Trumpet, Cornet & Flugel Horn Model List

As I collect more info from my sources I'll update the list. It also needs a bit more cleaning up. If you feel it needs any other details included please suggest. At some point I wish to include which markets a particular model was/is available in, eg. the James Morrison model was unique to the Yamaha Australia market.

I have started to create a draft timeline of the development and introduction of the Yamaha models. It has taken a while and a lot of Japanese translations to sort through the early models and how Yamaha evolved from the [r]Nikkan[/r] Wind Company. Sorting this information out means I can now move forward with just the Yamaha models. Note that most of the instruments build between 1967 and the opening of the Toyooka/Hamamatsu plant in 1970 are really hand built pre-production prototypes. Many variations between these YTR-634 models and the post-1970 production models can be observed. This will be updated and completed as time allows.
Yamaha - Trumpet History Timeline 1963-1972

Cheers for now from Australia

The sources I've sourced my information from is an older rip from Yamaha Japan's website, various brochures I've collected over the years (If you have any laying around I'd love to get a scan of them). I've also started contacting various Yamaha Alteliers to try and see what info they will share.

Could it be...the most informative first post ever?!

Thanks for doing all of the legwork on this. Will take a lot of the guesswork out of the Yamaha models.

That's fantastic work!

Dates of construction might be a good column to add. (Aha, or I could just slide across to see it - )

Some uploads of old brochures would be great too, I guess now it's here people can go crazy.

Well done.

THe first thing I'd like to work out and establish a standard for is the classification of the various model ranges.

I have not seen any published material relating to the pre-1982 3 digit model numbers so am unsure as to how they were marketed but from the Japan site rip I can work out the following.

1xx : entry level /college
2xx : entry level /college
3xx : entry level /college

6xx : professional
7xx : professional
8xx : professional
9xx : professional

Does anyone have any old brochures or marketing material from this time that they are willing to sent to me or share as a .pdf?

Post-1982 with the change to the 4 digit model numbers, the marketing material suggests the following.

T-xxx : T Series (Student?)
xxx-Q : Q-Class (2005 only, Student?)
xxx-AD : Advantage (Student?)
1xxx : Standard
2xxx : Standard
3xxx : Intermediate
4xx : Intermediate (Rotary only)
4xxx : Intermediate
5xxx : Allegro (introduced 2010 - , intermediate?)
6xx : Professional (Flugel range only)
6xxx : Professional
6xxxH : Professional Heavywieght (introduced 1987, replaced by Xeno Range)
6xxxH : Maestro Range (UK Brass Band marketing, now marketed as NEO range except cornets)
6xxx : Professional Signature Series (Bob Shew, etc...)
8xx : Custom (Unique Japan only medium bore range)
8xxxH : Pre-Xeno (Custom?) (Japan only) 1986-1990
8xxxUS: Xeno I (Japan only, 1990-1994)
8xxxUSII: Xeno II (Japan only, 1994-2001
8xxx : Xeno (international model, 2001-)
8xxx : Xeno Artist Series (Chicago, New York etc. introduced 2005-)
8xxxZ : Custom Z (Bobby Shew)
9xx : Custom (Rotary only)
9xxx : Custom
9xxx : Custom Artist (Allen Vizzutti, Bergeron, etc...)

As you can see there is quite a lot of varience in the way models are described, breaking away from the Range/Key/Bore/Model number structure.

Cheers

Alfafreak, you are a gentleman of taste - Japanese Trumpets and I assume from your moniker Italian Cars (Lancias are more my thing in that area).

Pre 82 brochures are hard to come by - I did have some that got lost in one of my moves.

Regarding the older instruments, the 2xx were definitely marketed as student horns.

The 6xx were professional horns, and the 7xx were marketed as the silver plate versions of the 6xx horns, but otherwise the same - 632/732, 634/734 etc. However, it does seem they were constructed differently, with Yellow Brass bells on the 7xx horns rather than the Copper that was on the 6xx horns. And of course some of the horns were built in the USA (legend has it in the Schilke factory), and some in Japan.

Like a lot of horns and their history, not completely straitforward, but you've made a great start in sorting it out.

Cheers,
Roger

I was inspired to dig out some Yamaha model info from a previous post of mine. Sadly, I only know about horns build when I started playing back in the mid to late 80's. So, I can't help with the old 3 digit ones.

Anyway, for the 4 digit models...

Since you covered the first digit of the model numbers better than I did, I'll just add what I know about the others.

For the next number - the second digit - it appears to indicate the key of the horn.

3=Bb trumpet
4=C trumpet
6=Eb trumpet
7=G/F trumpet
8=Bb/A piccolo

The third digit is a bit hard to figure. I thought it was bore size like...

1 = small
2 = medium? (haven't seen this used?)
3 = ML
4 = Large bore

It works for some models, but not others - unfortunately.

The letters at the end of the model are pretty simple...

H = Heavy Wall / Heavy Weight
G = Gold Brass (optional, Yellow Brass is standard)
S = Silver plate (optional)
R = Reversed leadpipe
T = Trigger?

Then there's the Z for the Shew horns. LA for the Wayne model. Any other weird ones people know?

II is the second generation of that same model - not changing the series.

Examples...

6445HII (6=Pro Series, 4=C Trumpet, 4=Large Bore, 5=?, H=Heavy Wall, II=Mark II)

6335S (6=Pro Series, 3=Bb Trumpet, 3=ML Bore, 5=?)

8335RGS (8=Xeno Series, 3=Bb, 3=ML, 5=?, R=Reverse Leadpipe, G=Gold Brass, S=Silver)

6610ST (6=Pro Series, 6=Eb, 1=small bore, S=Silver, T=Trigger)

8310Z (8=Xeno, 3=Bb, 1=small bore, Z=custom Shew design)

Sadly, some of these break this convention, notably my first horn, a Yamaha student cornet.

2310 (2=Standard Series, 3=Bb, 1=would be small bore, but it's not, Doh!)

So, either that third digit means something else - which is possible, or they're not consistent.

Hmm....

Anyway, great posts and fun and informative thread!

Top post !

You just miss YTR-8335LA Xeno - Artist Series (Wayne Bergeron) :
nothin of the bore, material etc...

ML, Z modified gold brass leadpipe, yellow brass 5'' Z modified bell
2 pieces valve casing all in yellowbrass , large bore main tuning slide.

And the best valves i'ever played for a Yamaha (Due to the all brass valve casing ?)

thanks again for your post AlfaFreak

Don't forget to check out the Photos section either.
As I collect pictures I'll make them available in the right most column.

If you have photos of a particular model please feel free to email them to me at yamahacollector@gmail.com

I'm particularly after the following pictures:

1. Left View
2. Right View
3. Close up detail of the Model Number stamp.
4. Close up of any bell engraving if any
5. Close up of and Leadpipe markings/engraving.
6. General view of the case open with horn and closed if in the ORIGINAL case
7. Any other picture of things that differentiate the model from others, ie; triggers, or slide stop rod etc...

Cheers

Wow! That's impressive! However, I didn't see my horn on there (see my signature). Was it not mentioned anywhere on Yamaha's site or any advertisements?

dtrumpetj: I haven't found reference to the YTR-8345RGS yet.
When you get a chance can you take some photos and email me with them. I have listed the types of photos I'm after in an earlier post.

Ah, YTR-6335J and YTR-6335JII, the Morrison (James, not Tim) models, which are no longer produced for the Australian market appear to be misssing, as is the YTR-6335A, which is the Aussie version that they now sell instead of it.

There are and have been, many many models of instrument for specific markets, such as an A series student flute - for Australia. The selling point was that it was made so it played at A=440 with the headjoint all the way in. Yes. That's right, some bozo convinced Yamaha to do this in the 1980's.

So the Morrison models are easy to miss.

cheers

Andy

Hi Andrew, your completely right regarding the James Morrison models. If my memory serves me correctly there was a third one in the sequence. Either an anniversary version of the II model or a seperate III model, differentiated by special engraving including James signature. Maybe would be best to contact him directly for clarification?

With regards to the YTR-6335A do you have access to a photo of this stamped on a horn. As you know, we get fairly limited access to the full range of yamaha trumpets here in Australia. All the materials I have simply refer to the 6335. No Australia specific marketing material available.
