Anyone have Sherry at Artistic Engraving restore vintage engraving? If so, how much was it? I have some thinking to do.

Short version: my "new" Holton 48 not only needs valve replating, it was made wrong, so it would need new stems as well to get the valves to line up properly. I have no idea how it plays so who knows?

On the other hand, I have a Lightweight 400 that also needs valve replating. I already know what that horn will sound like but its engraving was buffed pretty badly, so it would get that recut as part of the restoration.

In the meantime, anyone have long stems in nickel silver that will fit a Holton 48?

No hairy rush for this, but I like being able to plan as I usually use tax refunds for this work and I have a slot in February with Charlie for a full restoration and it doesn't matter which horn I bring.

Tom

A good friend of mine had Sherry Huntley re-engrave his Conn Naked Lady tenor sax. It looked great, but I don't know what it cost him.

I can recut engraving for you. My work can be seen here. If you send me photos of the horn (especially the existing engraving) I can give you a quote. My email address is jdumars@gmail.com

I had it done on my Recording cornet (through Charlie) at AE on his recommendation. The original engraving had been over-buffed during a lacquer re-do my father had done at a local shop in Abilene, TX, like 45 years ago. Charlie said after all the other restoration work he was doing, the engraving would really be the only thing wrong with it, since it was almost gone in places.

He said Sherry had done this sort of thing for him many times, and she knew the specific engraving patterns already as a result. She did a beautiful job on it. Since I paid only Charlie, rolled into a lot of other work, I don't know exactly what she charged.

I'm trying to remember, but I want to say it was somewhere in the area of $150-$250 to retrace the whole thing. I don't think that's bad at all, considering the quality of the work, and the fairly elaborate engraving style used on the Recording bell.

Y'all are a little late on this. That horn's been back for months. Sherry did recut the engraving and as it wasn't terribly elaborate, it cost me $100.

I was going to offer to do it for free ...

I've never done it before. I would have liked to learn on your horn.

Oh, well ....

Sorry, I can't seem to remember to check the original posting date on threads like this. People seem to keep reviving threads that have been dead for months or years.

Well, I certainly did miss the boat! I guess if anyone needs a re-cut, let me know.

If you want the best work done, then cost should not matter. Sherry has done a few horns for me and they have all been perfect.
