|
|
Hi list mates,
I'm posting this announcement for Austin, TX-based, trumpeter, Nathaniel Mayfield, who had his car broken into at a hotel in Houston, TX over the weekend, resulting in the theft and loss of his main instrument, a baroque trumpet made by Egger. Description is below:
A four hole Egger baroque trumpet in raw brass (silver bell garland and ball), with Ehe bell in long bag case along with Sony HD camera, extra leadpipes, four or five different crooks, and at least eight mouthpieces. Total value in excess of $5000.
Pictures can be seen below:
Because of the rarity of an instrument like this coming up for sale, could I please ask all to keep an eye out for this horn. If you have any leads, please contact Nate at:
nate@natemayfield.com
Please help get the word out about this horn! Thank you!

Will do!
I would imagine that's far more difficult to unload than a Bb or a C. I'm sure a pawn shop guy looks at that and says "what is that?"
Nate had some great YouTube videos up with that horn. Very sad.
Let's hope the brass and musical community can crack this one and get it back in the rightful owner's hands! _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

Thanks! These are the last images of the horn, taken the same day the horn was stolen. So sad! _________________ Dave M

This might be a useful tool. I've done a couple of quick searches already, but haven't found anything yet.
You can use it to search all the craigslist-s across the country.

Nate,
I am so sorry to hear about your horn being stolen! I can only imagine the look on a pawn shop clerks face if someone were to bring a natural trumpet in to sell!!! |

In the highly likely event that they can't find a pawn show that knows what it even is, maybe they'll return it?
Seriously, who steals one of those things?
Do we have a serial number on it, though? _________________ Jeff Mason |

Probably be lucky to get $50 if that at a pawn shop for it. The Sony camera is the jack pot item for them because they can trade that for Crack or give it as a gift. The MP's are easy to sell on Ebay or craigslist too and no way of tracking them.
Sad part is they might pitch the horn thinking it is some decrotive piece like those fake swords they sell to torist in Spain that are not fit to slice cheese. Not knowing what it is they will have no idea that is a valuable instrument to the right buyer!
This time of year purses and book bags get stolen out right or gone through if left unattended for even a minute for cell phones, cash, expensive calculators, laptops or cash! I took my laptop inside with me instead of leaving it in my car for this very reason even though I did not need it. I do the same thing at Hotels. If I need an item as in mission critical then I unload my car into the room. If I leave the room to go some place I pack it all up and lug back down to the car. I do not even leave my GPS in the car when I am on the road. Sad but true traveler's and tourist have always been easy marks! _________________ The only easy day was yesterday!

I'm not sure if the mouthpieces are standard, though.
Also, I'm not sure if the average crook thinks brass mouthpieces are worth anything. After all, the average used standard trumpet mouthpiece (like a Bach or Schilke) is probably only worth $10-15, if that. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

-No, Egger trumpets play and sound best with a Baroque tpt mouthpiece.
It usually has a 3-stepped backbore and a far larger shank so won't fit into a "normal" trumpet receiver.
The entire m.piece is quite a lot bigger and heavier than standard.
The one that can be seen on the 2nd picture looks like an Egger mouthpiece to me.
-Egger prints very tiny serial numbers that can usually be found on the bell where the bell-rim is wired together with the lower bend of the tube (see 1st picture). Even knowing where it is, you really have to look for it; on the bell-rim, next to the perforation, with the tube almost covering the number.
What a desaster for Nate...
Let's keep an eye out for his instrument.

I'm in Houston, I'll certainly be on the lookout for it. The local Craigslist does have a lot of instrument ads, hopefully the theif will be stupid enough to try to sell it there.

I do not know who coined the term "1500 mile rule" but someone on this site mentioned how horns turn up 1500 miles away from where they where stolen? So it must be a rule of thumb because it sounded like it was the norm! _________________ The only easy day was yesterday! |

Hey, thanks everyone for the support. It's been a difficult few days.. To update. I've checked ALL the Houston clist musical instruments and antique ads. Plus the for sales with certain search words. Also a lot of surrounding cities. Nothing yet.. Also, HPD just called today saying it's on the pawn shop watch lists, but also, nothing yet. I appreciate all the kind words and encouragement. If I let myself experience feelings, I would be completely depressed right now, haha.. Hey, we're supposed to save feelings and emotions for the concert, right?!
Anyways, we'll see what happens. I'm actually glad it happened to me and not someone else. Let's just keep an eye out. I'm sure it'll turn up. I don't have a record of the serial number. We'll see if Egger had one. HOPEFULLY so! Otherwise, let's wait for someone to start posting youtube videos with a lot of missed notes!!!
Take care and thanks,

Nate, I hope your horn is recovered...in the same condition, of course.
This reminds me about this past weekend after I played a gig with my Bb. I met my family and a couple of friends at a restaurant. I entered carrying my Torpedo Bag. My friend thought I was foolish for bringing it in. I've heard far too many horror stories, so I keep it/them with me. I get some strange looks sometimes, but I ignore them. If asked, I simply explain what it is and leave it at that. _________________ Tom Davis

I often do the same thing. For the times when I do need to leave a horn in my car, I've devised a solution:
I've disabled the "pop the trunk" button on the dashboard and locked the back seats so they can't be folded down to access the trunk. Even if a thief knew I had something of value in there, it wouldn't be easy to access, and car thieves need to be quick. I also never leave a horn in the car overnight, trunk or not.
I realize this doesn't help Nate, but I have a feeling his horn will turn up. The list of people who'd be in the market for a used natural trumpet must be very short, and I'm sure many of them post here. _________________ Jonathan Vieker
