Hi everybody.
Please pass this on to any interested students.
I'd like to encourage anyone who is interested in getting an excellent trumpet education for cheap to consider The University of Missouri-St. Louis.
http://www.umsl.edu/~umslmusic/index.html,
For an in-state (or neighboring Illinois counties) yearly tuition is only $8600, and we have 2 half scholarships available for incoming freshmen or transfer students for next year (2011-12). So for $4300 you get:
Full accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music to study for a Bachelor's in Music Ed, Music Performance, Music Business, or Arts in Music.
The trumpet faculty is myself and Mark Hyams:
Trumpeter Joshua MacCluer is on the faculty of the University of Missouri-Saint Louis School of Music and is in his eigth season as Second Trumpet with the Saint Louis Symphony. Prior to his appointment, he served as principal trumpet of the Colorado Symphony for two seasons, acting principal trumpet of the Baltimore Symphony for one season, and has also been a member of the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra in Washington, D.C., the Florida West Coast Symphony, the Grand Rapids Symphony and the Ann Arbor Symphony. He has performed as guest principal with the San Francisco Symphony, the Malaysian Philharmonic, the National Taiwan Syphony, the Colorado Music Festival, the Singapore Symphony, the Omaha Symphony, the New Mexico Symphony, and the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, and has also performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Columbus Symphony and the Florida Orchestra. He has performed as soloist with the Saint Louis Symphony, the Malaysian Philharmonic, the Colorado Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony and at Eastern Music Festival. Joshua studied at Oberlin with William Lucas.
Trumpeter Mark Hyams is on the faculty of the University of Missouri-Saint Louis School of Music and also is Principal Trumpet of the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra. Formerly Second Trumpet of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, Mark plays regularly with the Saint Louis Symphony, including tours with the orchestra to Carnegie Hall and California. From 2002-2009, Mark was Principal Trumpet of the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, and performed regularly with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Santa Fe Opera, Colorado Music Festival, Santa Fe Symphony and Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestras. Mark received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and his Master’s degree from Northwestern University.
On top of the faculty, masterclasses and guest teaching at UMSL in the last two years included:
Susan Slaughter
Tom Hooten
Craig Morris
Tom Drake
Michael Walk
Student trumpeters will participate in wind ensemble, orchestra, big band, jazz combo and chamber music. Alan Beeson teaches jazz trumpet and the jazz program chaired by Jim Widner is excellent and ambitious. Jazz masterclasses in the last two years include:
Wayne Bergeron
Terell Stafford (with Bobby Shew and Wayne Bergeron)
Roger Ingram
Ray Vega
So for in-state students this is an super excellent value for a top notch trumpet education. If you're interested, please contact the Director of bands Gary Brandes at brandesg@umsl.edu or (314) 516 2263. Any trumpet related questions send me a PM. Just know that if you come you should want to get your butt kicked, because we mean business here.
